☔ Working in the Rain ☔

Training a reliable service dog means proofing their behaviors in all kinds of environments—Rainy weather introduces an entirely new world of sensory input, distractions, and challenges that a dog needs to handle with confidence.

Here are some consideration when training your service dogs to handle the rain:
* Umbrellas & Rain Gear: A sudden popping open of an umbrella can be incredibly startling to an untrained dog. Service dogs need to learn to walk calmly alongside a handler carrying an open umbrella and navigating crowded sidewalks where others are carrying them and remain confident and comfortable with people opening and closing their umbrella.
* The Unexpected Sounds: During a storm there can be sudden and unexpected claps of thunder, which can cause a dog's focus to easily be shaken if not accustomed to the sound. This is a why desensitizing them to these auditory triggers helps to ensure they stay grounded when a storm rolls in.
* The Ultimate Distraction (Puddles!): To a pet dog, a puddle is a fun opportunity to run and play in the water. For a working service dog, it’s a distraction that must be ignored which can be difficult if you have a dog who loves the water! Training an automatic "leave it" and practising a focused heel past different bodies of water is a must for keeping their handler safe and dry.
* Muddy Paws: Wet pavement, slick entryways, and muddy grass may also mean mastering the wipe your paws routine or waiting patiently for a towel-down before entering a public space.
* Public Access Etiquette: remember to pack a little towel to dry your dog off before entering a public space, this plays a huge part of being a polite working team while in public spaces.

Building a dependable service dog takes time, patience, and a lot of wet-weather practice. The next time it rains, it's the perfect opportunity to grab the treats and head out for a training session! 🌧️

Some of our dogs got to spend the day exploring West Edmonton Mall!

While our advanced dogs worked on their tasks and skills in a busy, highly distracting environment, our younger pup joined for a shorter outing to take in new sights, sounds, and experiences at his own pace. We even had one of our fully trained service dogs come along to show off her skills and prove she is still sharp.

A big part of our training approach is meeting each dog where they are at. For our puppies and younger dogs, outings like this are about positive, controlled exposure. Socialization is not about doing everything all at once. It is about building confidence gradually and making sure they are not overwhelmed. Short, successful experiences go a long way in shaping a stable, resilient dog.

For our more advanced dogs, these environments are where we really start to refine and proof their skills. As they move into the final stages of training, it is important that they can stay focused and reliable no matter what is going on around them. Busy places like this help prepare them for real world situations they will experience with their future handlers.

Even for fully trained service dogs, the work does not stop. Just like any learned skill, their training needs to be maintained. Regular practice keeps their responses sharp, builds confidence, and ensures they can continue to perform their tasks reliably when it matters most.

We are so proud of all of these dogs, and days like this are so rewarding as we get to watch each of them reach new milestones in their training 🩵💙

💙 We had a wonderful time having a group class with some of our Calgary teams at a local park !

🩵 It was a fantastic opportunity for the dogs to practice focusing around new dogs.

🐾 The teams worked diligently on core skills like their stays, recall, and loose-leash walking, while also learning advanced skills like shaping and pivoting.

👏 Outstanding work to all the handlers and dogs involved. We look forward to seeing you at the next one!

Big mall, bigger focus! 🐾 Our advanced dogs paired up with our pups-in-training for a productive class at West Edmonton Mall last week. From conquering escalators, elevators, and glass railings to resisting the food court smells and fries on the floor, everyone did so well and learned lots. Amazing work to everyone who came out for the fun!

🩵 Ever wondered what the day before a dog officially gets placed looks like?
It might surprise you, but during the last couple of days we hit the pause button and we focus on keeping their final days simple and decompressing. We do this because the days following a placement bring a massive amount of change and excitement, so to set them up for success when stepping into their new chapter we focus on filling their routine with decompression walks, play, and a whole lot of cuddles. Giving them this quiet window to rest ensures they start their new journey feeling relaxed, happy, and ready for a week full of training.

💙 Today looked a lot like:
* Decompression walks: Swapping structured training for long, relaxing freedom walks where they can just explore.
* Pure fun: Incorporating plenty of play and their favourite games into their routine.
* Lots of affection: Tons of cuddles, downtime, and rest

🩵 The Edmonton puppy raisers took their service dogs in training to the annual Get Ready in the Park event.

🚨In honour of Canada’s Emergency Preparedness Week our pups explored inside emergency vehicles, met first responders, and practised their public access skills in a busy high energy environment.

🚑 This opportunity provided our dogs great socialization experience to new sounds, sights, and different uniforms and a mascot! This all contributes to building confident dogs who can handle a variety of situations and events which is very important for their future careers.

🩵💙This week we are celebrating Mental Health Awareness Week!

With the weather warming up it was the perfect time to go outside and with help from one of our favourite artist we did an art project.

Did you know licking is a powerful tool for a dog to lower their cortisol level? Service dogs often face stimulating environments that can increase their stress levels. This is why we prioritize decompression and downtime as it is vital in their everyday life so that they stay happy, healthy, and ready to work!

What other fun activities do you enjoy doing with your pup? 🩵💙
