If anyone is looking for feeder bugs I HIGHLY recommend Slice of Life Vivariums! My baby Mantises can not get enough of the fruit flies supplied by Slice of Life Vivariums! The fruit flies are just the perfect size. Owners Donna and Sharon are very helpful and knowledgeable. They taught me how to properly maintain my mantises food supply. They sell quality products and are the ONLY place I was able to find in Northern Ontario who provide fruit flies, which are necessary for insect and small reptile and amphibian husbandry. They also sell Poison Dart frogs!! An adorable and interesting species! If you want to delve into the interesting world of Vivariums, give Slice of Life Vivariums a call!

So the feeding are going well! Once the fruit flies are deposited into the Mantis tank, the feeding frenzy begins! Everyone is jumping around so fast! The Mantises are jumping at the fruit flies and the fruit flies sre trying to get away! It is real wild to watch. I am hoping to get a video of it in the next couple of days to share with everyone. I will be posting some pics later of the fruit fly vacuum that my husband made foe me. It works so well and makes feeding so easy. No escapee fruit flies or Mantises! PERFECT!! Have a great day everyone!!

1 week mark reached! Viverium is holding steady with good temperature and humidity. I have been spraying the moss at noon everyday to keep the humidity steady. I covered the top screen with pantyhose as the nymphs may be small enough to get theough the screening used on the lid. I have to make sure twice a day that the ootheca (egg sack) isn't too dry or too wet. If it gets too dry the nymphs cannot hatch...if it gets too wet, the ootheca can mold and kill the nymphs. I am considering removing the ootheca from the netting and attatching it to a dowel so that the netting does not become a problem when the egg begins to hatch. Once they begin to emerge, the nymphs will stay attached to the ootheca by a fine web, until there body dries and begins to harden. This process will take an hour or two. Once they drop off of their thread they will disperse into the foliage to begin hunting!

Day 4- Still good temperature and humidity. Turned the egg sack today so the front is more observable. Making sure the sack is shaded from any sunlight coming in my windows by the croton leaf. I am sure I observed a few aphids on the African Violet today. They will make a great food source for nymphs when they hatch. Once the nymphs emerge, if there is not enough food available they will begin to eat each other. This is why they need a lot of foliage to disperse into and why 500 nymphs hatched will quickly dwindle down to 100 adult mantis'.

A little hazy tonight...humidity is just a pinch high but still in the safe zone and not moving higher. Saw slight movement today which could mean that the larvae are moving around. I now have a contact for fruit flies for when they are born. I have made arrangements to get different sizes and cultures to use as they grow and will be expanding to hopefully make my own fruit fly cultures.
