March is Pet Poison Prevention Month 🚨

One of the most common poisoning risks for pets is rat poison (rodenticide).

Rodenticides are often used around homes, barns, garages, and sheds. Unfortunately, they can be very appealing to curious pets. Dogs and cats may eat the bait directly, or be exposed by catching rodents that have already consumed it.

Different types of rat poison affect the body in different ways, but many interfere with essential body functions and can be fatal.

Possible signs of poisoning include:
• Weakness or lethargy
• Pale gums
• Bruising or bleeding
• Difficulty breathing or coughing
• Vomiting or loss of appetite
• Tremors or seizures

Prevention tips:
• Avoid using rodenticides in areas accessible to pets
• Store pest control products securely out of reach
• Monitor pets closely if rodent control is used nearby
• Always contact your vet if exposure is possible

If you suspect your pet has ingested rat poison, do not wait for symptoms, contact us at 519-986-2800 immediately.

🌩️ Thunderstorm Safety Tips for Pets 🐾

Thunderstorms can be frightening for our furry friends. Here’s how to keep your pets calm and safe during a storm:

1. Set Up a Safe Space
Create a comfortable, quiet area indoors where your pet feels secure, such as a crate, a closet, or a spot under the bed. Adding blankets, toys, and familiar scents can help them feel more relaxed.

2. Stay Calm and Reassuring
Pets often take cues from their owners. Speak gently and remain calm to help reassure them. Avoid scolding anxious behaviour, as it can make their fear worse.

3. Reduce the Storm Noise
Playing soft music, leaving the TV on, or using a white noise machine can help mask the loud sounds of thunder.

4. Keep Pets Inside
If your pet usually spends time outdoors, bring them inside before the storm begins. Frightened pets may try to run away or could injure themselves while trying to escape.

5. Use Anxiety Aids
Composure Pro Chews are a natural calming supplement designed to support relaxation in dogs during stressful situations like thunderstorms, fireworks, travel, or other anxiety-triggering events. They’re easy to give and can help your dog feel more comfortable when the weather turns stormy.

If your dog experiences thunderstorm anxiety, stop by the clinic to learn more about whether Composure Pro Chews could help keep them calm and comfortable.
