New post! We know how important it is to choose dog training methods with care. Scientists and animal welfare organizations are united in recommending reward-based methods because of the risks of using aversives, including the risks of increased fear, anxiety, stress, and aggression. For SPCAs and humane societies, it's important to know that people have access to trainers who use reward-based methods, because the increased risks of behaviour issues with aversives use may lead people to surrender dogs to shelters. Well, a new study investigates the methods used by dog trainers in BC. The good news is that 72% of them use reward-based methods only. While we'd love that figure to be 100%, this is an important finding--and there are some other interesting findings of this study too.
