With great sadness, the GSSCC Ontario Region shares that longtime member Josef (Joe) Dworatschek has passed away at the age of 89.
Joe began his journey in 1969 with a female German Shepherd Dog, training in pet obedience with Glen Johnson at St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario.
He was introduced to Schutzhund in 1972 upon joining the SV, and throughout the 1980s traveled frequently to Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin to title dogs. In 1984, Joe earned his USCA Gold Sports Medal.
In 1993, Joe founded the Windsor Schutzhund Training Club (WTSC), which he operated on his property through 2025. He took great pride in mentoring new helpers, many of whom went on to become regional and national-level helpers and trainers across Canada and the United States. Over the years, Joe worked with many handlers and dogs and was deeply committed to the success of his club members.
Joe was a steadfast advocate for the German Shepherd Dog, dedicated to preserving the breed’s essential working qualities of temperament, drive, and conformation.
In keeping with Joe’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. The family kindly asks that no flowers or donations be sent. Those wishing to share condolences may do so by writing to his son Norman Dworatschek at 5450 Sexton Side Rd, Maidstone, ON N0R 1K0.
Joe’s legacy lives on in the many dogs he trained, the helpers and handlers he mentored, and the enduring standard of excellence he championed.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to learn from him, work alongside him, and witness his unwavering dedication to the sport and the breed he loved.
