Biochar is quickly being adopted into community planning as a new option to consider in fuel management, adapting the ancient practice of the amazonian peoples who were able to grow sustainable food in thin jungle soils easily washed away by tropical rain. Its a method of making charcol in the absence of oxygen, quenching with water before it turns to ash, and inolculating the nuggets with nutrient that fertilizes soil and GROWS MORE SOIL forever forward.

This seed counter is in the KPU Seed Lab. This seed lab is available for seed growers to make arrangements to use. Check out this short video where Chris Thoreau, BC coordinator for the Bauta Initiative, was packing seeds for the BC Seed Trials utilizing the lab facilities. It's a slower process than using sized spoons, and much more accurate.

This foot powered thresher is super handy for seeds still on the stalk to dance them free of their houses. Simply start the wheel in motion, keep pumping the pedal in the front, and hit the seeds onto the top of the turning studded wheel with a slight pulling back toward you motion. You can run stacks of beans on the stalk, shucks of grain, brassica seeds on stalk, or any other seeds you can imagine growing or collecting through. We've even had 2 of us pumping the pedal simultaneously, feeding beans sided by side, keeping it flowing all afternoon, entertaining each other while getting the job done!

One more asset: Have you ever had ripe seed pick up moisture after a rain, and need to redry it so it will open? No need to redry seed that is fully rip and has been dried. We've threshed both soybeans and brassicas that we could not split with our hands or feet, but shattered easily with this thresher !

The baffles, adjusted by the k***s on the front of this hand crank winnower, make it possible to clean seed of varying differentiation of weight of seed and chaff. For lighter seeds, such as lettuce or phacelia, turn the k***s to a more upright position, especially in the outermost chamber, catching seeds before they fly out. You control the wind, so simply crank slowly.
