A sad but important read if you are getting a puppy. 🐾😢
A couple months ago, we experienced something absolutely heartbreaking. A puppy that was bred and raised here at Siren passed away shortly after going home. We called him Abraxos here, though he wasn’t even with his new family long enough for them to settle on his forever name yet.
We sat on sharing this for a while because we wanted time to process it privately first, but I do think there is an important educational conversation here — especially for new puppy owners.
After a full necropsy was performed, the findings showed that Abraxos passed from asphyxiation caused by overeating. According to the necropsy report, approximately twice the appropriate amount of food was found throughout his stomach and esophagus, causing severe distention and obstruction of his airway. There were no congenital defects, infectious diseases, or other underlying conditions found.
As breeders, we send puppies home with feeding instructions for a reason. Young puppies are tiny, immature, and often act like they are starving all the time — especially in a new environment where stress and excitement can increase appetite. Overfeeding, feeding too quickly, excessive treats, or allowing unrestricted access to food can become dangerous much faster than people realize.
It is also incredibly important that baby puppies are supervised while eating. Puppies this young should never be left unattended with meals, free-fed large amounts of food, or allowed to gorge themselves too quickly.
This post is not about blame or shaming anyone involved. Accidents and misunderstandings happen, and I truly believe everyone loved this little dog very much. But if sharing Abraxos’ story helps even one family avoid this kind of tragedy, then it’s worth having the conversation.
Please listen to your breeder’s feeding guidelines, ask questions when you are unsure, and remember that with babies this young, consistency, supervision, and portion control truly matter.
Abraxos was so incredibly special to us, and he deserved a long, beautiful life. ❤️
