One week post surgery and recovery is going well!

I really wish rehab programs would be suggested post spay because it is a HUGE surgery. Return to activity should be steady, not immediate. I do miss my running buddy and field time but for now we rest!

I have also decided I am using a ramp to exit and enter the car kennel forever! Its brilliant and easy to train!

This criticism used to really bother me when I trained full time and now I get defensive on behalf of my fellow trainers and all small business owners who eat s**t for their prices.

Back in the day, I remember charging $65 for private lessons. If you were to DM me now for a lesson, I would quote you $150-175. Thats INSANE. I understand that - but this massive increase is not a matter of ego or even huge profit margins. It is the result of living and existing in capitalism. Ask any dog professional who isn’t abusing the labour of others who work for them (a topic for another post) - the profit margin they earn isn’t huge.

Dog trainers are typically small business owners - they hustle for themselves and their prices often reflect the fact that all of the necessities of life have increased in cost: food, gas, vehicles, rent and housing. Trust me, these people do not want to charge the prices they do.

I am sure this is relevant and relatable across most industries but this is a never ending problem in capitalism - the machine must always be fed and the fall out we experience is evident when every single damn thing we want to access in society is behind a pay wall. Its obscene.

From a buyers perspective, I encourage you to view the trainer in front of you as a human being who needs food, access to shelter and is doing their best to survive this system. Just like you. If you view their work as less deserving than you - look inwards and reflect on why.

And fellow dog professionals : its never a guardians fault for being unable to afford your services or the sservices of any dog professional for that matter.

This is a systemic issue and one we should be critical of as a whole.

May this month be gentler for us all, eh ❤️

I had a really messed up moment the other day where I missed my old life so much. I always look around and wonder where Ebie is, especially in the evenings. It feels like the stair you trip on because you think its there but its not - unsettling.

But we can’t go back - only forward.

It is a bitter pill to swallow every day. I have nothing else inspiring or helpful to say about grief and crappy life circumstances except that I am with you all in solidarity since so many of us are in tough seasons. I am not saying it ends or get easier, but you aren’t alone.

So, guys a final reminder: my website is officially down and done!

You can book class with me via the link in my bio, email me or send me a message. Its been a slice ⭐️

To be honest it is a big relief not to pay 3k for a website and carry that cost at a typically slower time of year for trainers. Running a small business is tough and you always want a sharp website. Please be kind and empathetic when you hire help whether it be dog walkers or dog trainers. Dog professionals are sometimes viewed as a useless expense - ‘doesn’t charge an arm and a leg’ is an insulting sentence to anyone and honestly most of what trainers charge goes to the business or the CRA.

Most trainers I know are also GOOD people and offer discounts if cost is a concern. Just reach out as a human rather than a critic!

In any case if anyone needs training help I am always happy to offer relatively simple but good advice 😂 and recommend you someone who can help for real for real.

Capitalism sucks. View dog training through this lens -
It humanizes you.

If anyone wants to get together to train when this snow melts hit me up! I need spotters! Lol

Bebop’s ears are cold! 💀

Anyone else over this cold snap? stay warm out there!

Fun fact about behaviour: I noticed on our walks yesterday Bebop’s ears were slicked back a lot and in the house she’d shake off like it was itchy or painful. As the day progressed and we hiked on a trail, I noticed she did it again paired with piloerection when the wind seemed to hit us hard. We walked by a group of people on the trail and she hard stared at them and seemed suspicious of them rather than neutral which she usually is.

All of this ^ was information. Her ears hurt in the wind. It made her bitchy. And yeah, I could say ‘you wimp’ (I did) but I also recognized this as her needing warmth and then we adjusted our walks to cover her ears so she would have a better time. When we don’t pay attention to behaviour we miss subtle cues about our dogs feelings or needs. I 100% believe this is how many dogs become reactive to multiple triggers.

Stimulus can be paired with negative or frustrating feelings. Over and over again. Boom, reactive dog.

Anyway, she looks ridiculous but her ears are covered lol

Behaviour is always trying to tell you things! Stay warm!
