The equipment that we use to work our horses in and coach our riders in makes the difference between a stiff lope departure and a seamless one.

It helps determine whether your horse can lope comfortably with his shoulders so he can flex and relax across his topline and utilize his hind quarters.

💪🏻 The bison hide is a little tougher and meant to last a little longer than cowhide.
👉 So far we are really liking them and they're a hit with our clients not just because of the look, but the performance too.
🆙 A bison seat is considered an upgrade when you order a Bob’s Custom Saddle, which means it's not included in the base price of the saddle like the smoothout or roughout.

Can we talk about fender length for a sec?

I was on the phone with Chris Weaver from Bob’s Custom Saddles earlier this week and we were discussing ways to make a saddle to fit a client with specific needs.

When it came to fenders we said, ALMOST in unison, “Fender length can make or break saddle fit”.

If your fenders are the correct length for you, you should be riding in one of the middle holes of your stirrup leathers.

You should not have to crank them all the way up, add holes and suffer from sore ankles because they’re being pulled in from the bulk of leather.

I’ve done this for years. I’m 5’9 and in most reining saddles I adjust my stirrups to the highest hole.

That’s because most reining saddles are made for 6ft tall men!

😵‍💫

What happens to your body when your fenders are too long? They create tension in your ankle which tracks up into your knee, hip and lower back.

They can create pinching in the knee area with the dee ring.

They can make you have to fight to stay back in your saddle and pop you forward in your stops.

There are other factors to consider too, like the shape of the fender where it attaches to the saddle and the overall width.

Undecided on a back cinch for your saddle?

Do I need one? I don't typically ride in one but I do want to do some more Ranch Riding and would love to work some cows...

When you order a Bob's Custom Saddle, you can choose not only from adding a back cinch or not adding a back cinch, but also how it attaches to your saddle.

For example, the owner of the saddle pictured, isn't in the habit of using a back cinch to rein in. She did want to order her back cinch with her custom saddle so it would match her saddle and so she could add it on when she wants to do some more Ranch Riding or try working the flag or the cows.

She went with a leather keeper which can easily be pulled off and the back cinch can be totally removed or added back on easily.

If you're riding in a back cinch all the time, you might opt to have it laced on, rather than the keeper.

Everything is customizable and we are HAPPY to help you through the process of selecting the options that are right for you.

Can we take a moment and drool over Sarah’s saddle?!
🤤 🤤 🤤
It’s an antique light/medium finish.
Those conchos are sterling silver with matching rear dees.
The seat is chocolate bison.
The tree, seat, fenders and skirt shape are all going to make a massive difference in Sarah’s equitation and how easily she sits her stops on her Futurity horse!
We had fun putting this saddle together and I’m so thankful Sarah trusted me for this process. I only wish I could be there when she rides in it!

This is a smoothout seat and the colour is called Ranger Russet Brown.
Stacey went with a medium oil and combination of small basket and California floral corners.
We went with a 1” dropped rigging to reduce some bulk and a skirt with a lot of leg clearance.
The conchos are the classic Arizona tooled, sterling silver, round conchos.

Let's talk about the tooling on this saddle for a second. This is considered to be full tooling, because the tooling covers the entire saddle.

You can find this option on the Bob's Custom Saddles website under Custom Options - Tooling. It's the floral pattern called, "Paradise Valley", which is a combination of a few different types of flowers.

Look at that rust iron and silver combo on the concho and front dee!

Melissa has ridden in Bob’s saddles for a long time. The saddle she’s replacing is a 1987 Bob’s! Still in great shape!

For her custom saddle she chose:

💎 Cowhorse horn, back cinch and on-tree rigging so she can easily swap back and forth from reining to cowhorse

💎 Rust iron with silver scroll conchos and dees so she can jump to the ranch riding pen without too much shiny silver

💎 Dark chocolate colour with black smoothout seat that compliments her palomino

And about 37 other options we worked through together to make sure she was getting something beautiful, functional and versatile.

She’s finished it off with a pair of our Nettles stirrups.

Can’t WAIT to see this saddle in the show pen!
