Ways to Be a Responsible Dog Owner
Ways to Be A Responsible Dog Owner # 1
Recognize the Commitment
Before bringing home a dog, make an honest assessment about whether you are ready to take on the commitment of caring for another living creature. Are you ready for the financial, emotional and time commitment that owning a dog requires?
Dogs cost money to get basic veterinary care, buy food and supplies, pay for training, grooming, boarding, daycare, and if you're lucky you won't need any emergency care. Sometimes emergency care can be in the range of thousands of dollars - there are insurance companies who can insure your dog if that is out of your budget.
Dogs can take an emotional toll on you. They can be a wonderful, happy, funny addition to your family and have the potential to bring you great joy. However, dogs can also sometimes be destructive, messy, hairy, and frustrating. Are you ready for this potential emotional rollercoaster?
Finally, the amount of time a dog takes in your life can sometimes come as a surprise to people. They need walks, grooming, interaction, and training. Dogs are social beings who crave contact and need to be mentally stimulated on a daily basis.
Before bringing a dog into your life, ask yourself. Are you ready for the commitment of having a dog?
