Did you know that unlike humans who sweat all over, dogs primarily sweat through their paw pads? Dogs also cool themselves by panting, which is why you'll see them breathing heavily on hot summer days.

Keep your animals safe this summer by watching for signs of overheating such as excessive panting or drooling, lethargy, disorientation and rapid breathing. If you suspect your pet is overheating, contact your veterinarian right away. And remember, never leave your pet in a vehicle, even for a few minutes - if you see an animal in distress in a parked car, call 911.

Like humans, cats can develop diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the body cannot properly produce or respond to the hormone insulin. This results in elevated levels of the sugar glucose in the blood, which is the main source of energy for the body. The two most common signs of diabetes noticed by owners at home are weight loss despite a good appetite and increased thirst and urination.

Handsome Moose donated some blood today! We use blood donations from large young healthy dogs to spin down to make serum. Serum drops can be used to help heal corneal eye ulcers! Often the dogs that get the worst eye ulcers are senior tiny breed dogs that are harder to get blood on, so that’s when we can use donor serum 😁
Pretty cool right!
What a good boy Moose ❤️

Handsome Rogue belonging to the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes got a new smile today! He came to the HS with multiple fractured teeth (see radiograph below with an example of one of the teeth). Fractured teeth with exposure of the pulp of the tooth are quite painful as well as being at risk of developing a tooth root abscess from bacteria invading the exposed pulp. Rogue had all his fractured teeth extracted today and an ultrasonic clean and polish on his remaining teeth. He will be recovering over the next few weeks at the shelter, please contact them if interested in meeting him and learning more about his story!

Planning a backyard barbecue? Keep your furry friends safe:

☀️Keep food scraps away from pets - cooked bones can splinter and fatty foods cause stomach upset. Onions, garlic, and grapes are toxic.

☀️Create a safe zone away from hot grills, lighter fluid and charcoal. Store all barbecue supplies securely.

☀️Provide fresh water and watch for signs of overheating in the summer heat.

☀️Secure gates and doors - with guests coming and going, pets can easily slip out.

🩸 Lyme & Anaplasmosis 🩸

This dog’s 4DX test came back positive for both Lyme disease and Anaplasma — two tick-borne illnesses we’ve been seeing more often lately.

🧪 The 4DX test screens for:
• Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi)
• Anaplasma (Anaplasma phagocytophilum)
• Ehrlichia (Ehrlichia canis / E. ewingii)
• Heartworm disease

🕷 Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, and Anaplasma by Anaplasma phagocytophilum — both spread by ticks. Some dogs show no signs, while others may develop:
• Lethargy
• Decreased appetite
• Limping or shifting leg lameness
• Fever

🩺 Bloodwork may reveal changes like low platelets (thrombocytopenia), mild anemia, or markers of inflammation. Other symptoms or complications can also arise.

💊 Treatment typically involves a 28-day course of doxycycline, an antibiotic that targets both bacteria, often leading to improvement within days.

🛡 Even with tick prevention, infection can still occur — so testing is worth considering if your dog isn’t acting like themselves, especially during tick season.
