Yes, animals are put down in Canadian shelters—including here in Alberta.

Being in Canada does not automatically make a shelter “no-kill.” And “no-kill” does not always mean that no animal is ever euthanized.

Generally, a no-kill policy means healthy or treatable animals aren’t put down because the shelter is full or because they’ve been there too long. Euthanasia may still happen for severe, untreatable suffering or serious behaviour problems that make an animal unsafe to place.

A shelter’s no-kill policy is not the same as a law requiring every shelter to operate that way. Policies differ. Ask what each organization actually does, when it considers euthanasia and whether it publishes its numbers.

Several Alberta shelters specifically say they do not euthanize for space or time. That matters, and we should be fair about it. But it does not mean euthanasia never happens here.

Support your local rescues and shelters. Foster. Adopt. Help with transport. Donate food or funds. Giving them more ways to help animals makes a real difference.

Edmonton Humane Society and Calgary Humane Society both explain their euthanasia policies publicly, including their policies against euthanasia for space or time.
There are many municipal shelters that do have a mandatory hold time and if a rescue is not secured they do euthanize .

JUST ARRIVED!
Meet Matthew - around 9 months old. Matthew has some injuries from being bullied and attacked by other strays but just spent his first night as a house dog and is loving it!
Matthew will be visiting the vet this week for a check up and to get fixed. Apart from some scars and scabs he’s a handsome happy boy who already adores his foster family!
It was important for Matthew to find a safe place away from the pack before he was seriously injured or killed. This sweet boy deserves to be able to sleep and eat and play without fear.
Keep an eye out for updates and information when Matthew will be ready to find his forever home.
Welcome to the Pound Rescue family Matthew, only good days ahead for you ❤️
