The following states my opinion. Not your opinion, mine. You don’t have to agree with me.

No Stirrups November is a Mistake

In my opinion No Stirrups November is a hyped up excuse to use alliteration (a literary term defined as; the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.) as training inspiration.
My reasons that No Stirrups November is a mistake and should not be used as standard practise are as follows;

1) No stirrup work should be included in daily riding not just 30 days out of the year.

2) No stirrups work, in my opinion, should be done only after the horses back and other muscle groups are warmed up sufficiently. Therefore, riders, trainers, and coaches who remove stirrups from saddles November 1st are, in my opinion, subjecting horses to potential discomfort and or injury. In my opinion, only truly expert riders should ride entirely without stirrups.

3) Thirty consecutive days of intense no stirrup work may be greatly beneficial to the rider, however, in my opinion, this type of work imposed on a horse may have the opposite effect. Unless the rider is proficient at controlling leg, hand and seat, in my opinion, more than five to ten minutes of no stirrups work can be literal torture to the horse. In my opinion, slowly building up no stirrup sessions as each rider becomes more and more proficient is the best way to protect the horse.

4) Jumping without stirrups, in my opinion, should only be undertaken by advanced riders. Obvious safety reasons come to mind, but again the comfort of the horse is of great concern in this situation. The horse’s mouth and back come under great duress in normal jumping situations, particularly with less than advanced riders on their backs. Taking the rider’s stirrups away only exacerbates this potential for trauma.

Listen, I’m not gonna call PETA or the SPCA if I find out you took your stirrups off your saddle on November 1st. I’m just speaking from years of experience as a coach and trainer. Horses are my livelihood, and I love them. I would never subject my dear, dear schools or lease horses, to thirty days of mouth grabbing, back smashing torture. Nor would I do it to my client’s horses.

I firmly believe that no stirrup work in an important part of developing a rider and should be implemented in every riding program, just not for thirty days exclusively.
