“What’s the hardest part about having a dog?” they asked, their tone casual, like it was just another question.

I glanced at the worn leash hanging by the door, my chest tightening. “Letting them go,” I said quietly.

They frowned a little, waiting for me to explain. “They come into your life like they were always meant to be there,” I said, trying to find the words. “They make everything better—simpler, brighter. And you think it’s always going to be that way. But it’s not. One day, they’re gone, and you’re left with all the space they used to fill.”
They nodded, but I wasn’t sure they understood. “It’s not the messes they made or the routines you have to let go of,” I continued. “It’s the absence. You walk into the house, and it feels... wrong. The quiet is heavier. The mornings don’t feel the same without them nudging you awake.”
“So why do it?” they asked, their voice softer this time.

I sighed, glancing down at my hands. “Because the love they give you is worth every bit of the heartache. They teach you how to love without holding back, even when you know it’s going to hurt in the end. And you keep choosing that love because you know it’s one of the best things you’ll ever feel.”

Bezzie Mate Petersen
August 01/2010 - January 17/2025
Our beautiful angel passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.

Bezzie was approximately 2 years old when we received a call, Border Collie in need of a soft place to land. It was ment to be, Sugar soon to become Bezzie Mate fit in perfectly. Winning the hearts of Buster, Diddy and Purrbot.

Bezzie spent the next 13 years working at Planet Slobberedon as a greeter. Outstanding employee with her big beautiful smile. So dedicated trying to heard her boss to work even on the weekends. Bezzie was a bit of a flirt, she had a few fellows that she would pay special attention to. Her favourite’s were Buddy, Huxley and Louie.

Bezzie loved sports, she competed in Agility collecting achievements with AAC and CKC. Scent hurdle racing with team No Non Scents. Sporting Detection with Sniff and Tell. Rally Obedience training with Many Muddy Paws.

Never will we meet a kinder soul. Bezzie has welcomed all that have come through our door. Including some not so friendly foster dogs. Getting roughed up and never retaliating. Teaching her way of calmness.
Thank you Amanda for trusting us with her.

She leaves our family with heavy hearts, it has been a true blessing to have her in our lives.

A special thank you to Bridge Pet Hospital for your kind hospitality.
L.H.S. Pet Cremation Services the new owner’s Sarah and Brent. We appreciate you accommodating our requests. Brent called yesterday afternoon we were able to pick her up.
Bezzie is home.

Let’s talk about being a Responsible Pet Owner!

There have been a number of cats and dogs just dumped into the city lately. Some pretty high profile type events really. One of them nearly twenty cats/kittens dumped downtown and the other a bunch of dogs just let go in the industrial area.

I know that the people who follow this page are responsible pet owners. I know this because you wouldn’t be here reading about dog training and such if you weren’t. But maybe you can share this post and spread the words to your neighbors and friends.

Three Easy Ways to be a Responsible Pet Owner

1. Spay or Neuter your pet dogs. Unless you are breeding for specific reasons and are doing your best to preserve a specific breed you don’t need puppies. There are not enough homes. Honest. Even reputable breeders are struggling to place nice will raised puppies- the market is oversaturated. So I’ll even add that even if you are a reputable breeder you should hold off on that litter unless you have a wait list for puppies. The city does have a subsidized program for cheaper spay and neuters. It’s run through NOKA.

2. Have a Plan. Who will take your pets if you pass away? Are they going to commit to taking them or dump them at a shelter or leave them abandoned at your house? Choose your person well! Who will help you if you get hurt and have to be hospitalized? It’s not always nice to think about but you Have to have a plan for that!

3. Take care of your pet. Regular vet care, food, attention, training. These are all requirements of owning a pet. It’s your job to ensure the animals needs are met. This costs money. And to be fair- a lot of it. If you can’t afford it then maybe you need to choose a less expensive pet to care for. It’s not okay to get a cute puppy or kitten and then when it starts growing up and is a hassle to dump it onto someone else. There is no one else who is going to be able to fix your problem. No one else wants the dog you didn’t train or the cat you did spay who now has 8 kittens. No one. So take care of them- commit to their care. Love them. Train them.

And that’s it. Easy. Right?

Remember that our pets literally depend on us for every single need in their life. We owe it to them to do a good job.

Late Post:
We attended AB/NWT Regionals May 24-25-26. Very proud of my Outlaw Josey placing fourth in 12” DD Veteran category. Qualifying for nationals and received five placement ribbons.
Josey is a very nervous dog and didn’t have a very good show at regionals two years ago. Not that she doesn’t know her game. It’s the crowd the excitement the amount of dogs the visual pressure…. Just all that!
It was heartwarming to see her relaxed within a crowd of people and dogs, enough to sit between my legs and receive a massage. She’s just the type of gal that never wants to meet your dog and has a little interest in people too. Her distance for gambles is remarkable, but she struggles with moving away from me towards ring crew. I was able to send her away for an end gamble directly towards the timer and scribe without a wobble.
We were able to walk by the food trucks and all the generators, and have a quick wander through the vendors. She didn’t ask to leave when an elderly lady with her cane stood by us, she didn’t take her eyes off of her but she didn’t ask to run away. These are the things I am most proud of her for.
It was a beautiful bonding experience for me, and my fantastic companion.
FK9 put on an absolute splashing event, all the bells and whistles.
Feeling Grateful ❤️

It was my pleasure to spend the afternoon providing Miss Henrietta Freckles with her 1st Birthday Groom.
She’s a loving little soul that immediately decided she needed to be Besties with Siggy the salon cat. Some pictures of her seduction dance. Thought it was best to put Sigg in a kennel as sometimes there’s too much love ♥️

Please honour and respect, wildlife and wild places 💖

“We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals…For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with the extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings: they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.”
- Henry Beston

Have a peaceful weekend wildlife friends.

A gentle reminder to all; please honour and respect wildlife and wild places.

Good information on sharing space with wildlife.

Coyote families are under immense challenges when they are caring for their vulnerable neonate young. Please apply best practices for safe and healthy coexistence by using a leash when walking a dog. Coyote parents are protective and defensive when it comes to their young ones. A dog is like another predator to the parents and is perceived as a danger and threat.

Avoid intruding on den areas; never allow your dog to invade a den area off-leash, and photographers, please adhere to ethical guidelines when photographing wild animals. Learn about stress reactions (vocalizing, body gestures) that a wild animal may demonstrate and respect these communications by leaving them alone.

When you overstay your welcome in a sensitive area such as a den or rendezvous site, coyote parents may es**rt or "shadow" you away from this location.

⚠️ Coyote parents may bluff charge, howl, bark, pace back and forth asking you in their verbal and physical language to move away. Please listen and leave the area calmly.
Remember they are concerned parents who need to be sure that you (and your dog) are leaving and not a threat.

🐕‍🦺 Always walk family dogs on leash. Calmly leave the site and stay alert about your surroundings. Never turn your back and run.

Stay on marked trails when recreating outdoors and remember to never feed wildlife. For more information about using humane methods [aversion conditioning] to encourage wildlife to move away from an area, review our resources "Keeping Coyotes Away" at coyotewatchcanada.com

VITAL Reminder:
✅️Never use aversion conditioning [humane hazing] near a den area or near parents and pups

✅️Never attempt to engage with parents and pups, or interfere with a family while they are resting, eating, or caring for their young.
