Please do NOT trap and relocate Striped Skunks, especially this time of year. If you do, you are orphaning their babies 🦨

Last summer we admitted too many orphaned Striped Skunks and we were even forced to reduce intake of baby skunks due to capacity restraints. Most of these babies were orphaned due to the mother Skunk being trapped and relocated, affectively orphaning the kits. Although we do not recommend trapping in any situation as humane deterrents are always better from a welfare perspective, it is EXTREMELY important to know the situation before trapping.

Skunks are known to den under people’s decks and front steps, but that does not mean you’ll see them since they are nocturnal animals. Striped Skunks mate in late February—early March and have their litter of 5-6 kits in mid-May. At about 5 weeks you will begin seeing the skunk kits outside of their den during the day, this is very normal behavior as they play outside while their mom is asleep in the den.

As the warm weather appears please be aware and check your pets regularly.

Signs of a tick borne disease may not be apparent until 7-21 days after a tick bite, so it is important to check your pets for ticks everyday, especially after they have spent time outdoors. https://bit.ly/42WcgXi

If your pet gets anxious or stressed during vet visits, a pre-visit pharmaceutical (PVP) could help ease their nerves. These medications, used alongside behavior training and environmental changes, can make veterinary visits less stressful by targeting fear and anxiety.

Check out this blog to learn more about how PVPs work, how they can benefit your pet, and how your vet will guide you in using them effectively to improve your pet’s veterinary experience.

As Easter and Mother's Day are fast approaching it is important to be aware of the danger Lilies can cause to cats. Please be aware that chocolate is also toxic to cats and dogs so please keep it out of reach of our furry friends.

Easter and Mother's Day are two of the most dangerous holidays for cats for one reason: lily poisoning. 💐

As a part of our No Lilies for Kitties educational campaign, we're kicking off the series by sharing which species of lilies are toxic to cats. True lilies (Lilium species) and daylilies (Hemerocallis species) are extremely toxic to cats and can potentially cause severe kidney failure. Meet our RVT Sharon
1. How long have you been in the veterinary industry?
I graduated from Lakeland College in 2004. I have been in the vet industry for 24 years.
2. If you weren't an RVT, what would your dream job be?
I would have a pure bred Simmental cow/calf operation with my step-Dad. We would travel to cattle shows across Canada and the US.
3. What is your favorite animal to work with?
Cats - I love them so much!!
4. What is the best thing about being an RVT?
So many things!! I love that there's something new everyday and that everyday is different. I like that as an RVT I get to help with a bit of everything around the clinic. My favorite thing is when we nurse a sick animal back to health and it gets to go home. That reunion is so heartwarming between a pet and its owner.
5. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?
None. I like being a human.
6. When you are not busy taking care of animals - what do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy spending time with family, taking my kids new places, golfing, and curling.
