🐴 This Remembrance Day, we honour the brave—both human and horse—who served our country. 🇨🇦
Canadian horses played a quiet but vital role in WWII, hauling supplies, boosting morale, and even towing aircraft across the U.S. border when neutrality laws blocked direct delivery. Their strength and loyalty helped carry us through.
While WWII saw a shift toward mechanization, horses were still essential in many parts of the war effort, particularly in areas where vehicles struggled or fuel was scarce. Here's how they helped:
🐴 The Role of Horses in WWII for Canadian Forces
Transport and Supply: Horses were used to carry ammunition, food, water, and medical supplies to front-line troops, especially in mountainous or muddy terrain where trucks couldn’t pass.
Artillery Support: In some units, horses pulled light artillery pieces like howitzers using two-wheeled carriages called limbers and caissons. These setups allowed for quick repositioning of guns in the field.
Evacuation and Rescue: Horses helped evacuate wounded soldiers from battle zones, often under fire, when motorized ambulances were unavailable or impractical.
Morale Boosters: Horses also served as companions and mascots, offering comfort and a sense of normalcy to soldiers far from home.
