Meet Chili 🌶️ 🐾 Who stole the hearts of both our Emergency and Internal Medicine departments.

Chili presented to the ER department for lethargy, after being recently diagnosed with diabetes by our IM team. Chili was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which can occur when diabetes mellitus is undiagnosed or untreated, when insulin dosing is inaccurate, or when the animal develops another condition that causes insulin to become less effective.

The symptoms often include lethargy, poor appetite, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Sometimes these signs are preceded by increased thirst and urination, increased appetite, and weight loss over several weeks – these are the signs of undiagnosed or poorly controlled diabetes.

Chili was admitted to hospital and after three days his ketones and blood sugar returned to normal levels, he was bright, comfortable, eating well and was able to go home! Enjoy a few photos Chili's mom sent us happy and healthy at home as well as a few in hospital.

Meet Zashi 💛🐾 One of our Internal Medicine patients!

Zashi had a history of chronic gastrointestinal upset, but her story with our internal medicine team starts with the temptation of a delicious meatball. Although she had no regrets in the moment, after eating it Zashi began vomiting, developed diarrhea, and lost her appetite. Zashi's owner is familiar with inflammatory bowel disease from her past cats, and because she happens to be a local veterinarian she also knew that Zashi would benefit from the experience of an Internal Medicine specialist who could help determine why Zashi had been feeling worse.

Internist, Dr. Seigneur, began with a deep-dive understanding of Zashi's medical history, and then started diagnostics.
An ultrasound showed changes in her small intestines, raising concern for underlying gastrointestinal disease. Next, an endoscopy was performed to learn more, and a feeding tube was placed to support Zashi’s nutritional needs while treatment began. The endoscopy confirmed changes that were consistent with inflammation. The great news? Zashi responded beautifully to treatment and is now feeding-tube free and feeling great!

Zashi's story is perfect example of the complementary nature of primary care and specialty medicine, and the strong partnership that forms when professionals with different clinical focuses collaborate to give patients like Zashi the comprehensive care they need.

Meet Nelson 🤍🐾

Nelson is a 4 year old Saint Bernard Mix who decided to help himself to two ribeye steaks for dinner! His owners were able to locate one of the bones, but the second one was missing.

Shortly thereafter Nelson began experiencing vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence. Nelson was admitted to our hospital for supportive care and after repeating the x-rays a few hour later, a persistent foreign body was confirmed.

A gastroscopy was performed and the missing bone was retrieved! Nelson was able to go home that same day and is now feeling much better!

Just a reminder that although cooked bones can be digestible, there is always a risk of them causing obstruction. If you have any concerns, we are always here to help!

It can be difficult to know when a situation requires immediate emergency care.

Signs such as breathing difficulty, seizures, collapse, or severe injuries should always be evaluated right away.

AECFV is open 24 hours a day to provide emergency care when urgent situations arise.

Spring gardening season brings new hazards for curious pets.

Many fertilizers, plant bulbs, and pest control products can be toxic if ingested. Pets often encounter these items while digging or exploring freshly prepared garden beds.

They are often required during trauma, surgery, or when pets develop conditions that affect their ability to produce or maintain healthy blood cells.

Our hospital maintains a blood bank so that life-saving transfusions are available when pets need them most.

Dogs and cats explore the world with their mouths, but sometimes that curiosity can lead to swallowing objects that should never be eaten.

Foreign bodies can cause intestinal blockages that may require urgent treatment or surgery.

If your pet has swallowed something unusual or begins vomiting repeatedly, seek veterinary care as soon as possible.

Anita brings a wealth of experience in veterinary leadership, operations, and team development. In her role, she oversees the day-to-day operations of the hospital, supports our clinical and support teams, and helps ensure we continue delivering the high standard of care our patients and their families rely on.
