☀️🐾 BEST TIMES TO WALK YOUR DOG IN SUMMER 🐾☀️

As temperatures rise, choosing the right time of day for walks can help keep your dog safe and comfortable.

✅ Best times to walk:
• Early Morning: 5:00 AM–9:00 AM
• Late Evening: 7:00 PM–10:00 PM

⚠️ Try to avoid:
• 11:00 AM–5:00 PM when temperatures and pavement temperatures are typically highest.

🐕 Hot pavement can burn paw pads, and excessive heat can increase the risk of overheating, dehydration, and heat stroke.

💧 Remember to:
• Bring fresh water
• Walk in shaded areas when possible
• Take frequent breaks
• Watch for signs of overheating

For most dogs, early morning walks are the safest option during summer months, followed by evening walks once temperatures begin to cool.

As dog parents, we all want to do what’s best for our furry friends, and one of the most common questions that comes up is: Should I exercise my dog before or after eating? The answer isn’t always simple—it depends on your dog’s age, breed, health, and energy levels. But understanding the risks and benefits of timing exercise around meals can help keep your dog safe and healthy.

Why Timing Matters: Dogs digest food differently than humans. After a meal, blood flow increases to the stomach and intestines to support digestion. If your dog runs, plays, or trains too hard right after eating, it can interfere with digestion and, in some cases, lead to dangerous conditions like bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus, or GDV)—especially in large and deep-chested breeds.

Exercising Before Meals is great for burning off energy and can help dogs work up an appetite. It can also
support weight management as exercising on an empty stomach can encourage fat burning & help maintain a healthy weight.

❌ Exercising Immediately After Meals
Risk of bloat: Large and deep-chested breeds (like German Shepherds, Great Danes, and Standard Poodles) are especially vulnerable if they exercise too soon after eating.
Stomach upset: Even smaller breeds may vomit or develop discomfort if they run or jump right after a meal.

💦 WATER TOXICITY IN DOGS: A SUMMER SAFETY REMINDER 💦☀️

Summer is just around the corner and with that comes swimming, sprinklers, and water fetch games, great ways to help dogs stay cool. However, swallowing excessive amounts of water in a short period of time can lead to water intoxication (hyponatremia), a serious medical emergency.

⚠️ How It Happens
• Repeatedly fetching toys from pools, lakes, or rivers
• Playing with sprinklers or hoses
• Drinking large amounts of water after exercise
• Small dogs may be at greater risk because it takes less water to affect their body balance

🚨 Signs to Watch For
• Stumbling or loss of coordination
• Lethargy or weakness
• Vomiting or bloating
• Confusion or restlessness
• Excessive drooling
• Seizures
• Collapse or unconsciousness

🩺 Why It’s Dangerous
Excess water can dilute sodium levels in the bloodstream, causing cells to swell. Swelling of brain cells can lead to severe neurological symptoms and may become life-threatening without prompt veterinary treatment.

🐾 Do you worry about your dog chewing bully sticks too close to the end? I do, so decided to use the WoofBully Safe holder and have found it to be the best thing ever! You can see in the video my boy hangs onto it with his paw and chews until he gets down to the holder on the one side. He will then flip it over to eat the rest. This leaves about a 1"-1.5" leftover piece tightly held in the holder which I toss in the garbage to prevent any possible choking hazard.

As you know, when bully sticks become shorter, dogs may be more likely to swallow the remaining piece whole, which can increase the risk of choking or gastrointestinal obstruction.

🌱🐾 **Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?**

Many dogs eat grass from time to time, and in most cases it's considered normal behaviour.

Some reasons dogs may eat grass include:

✅ Natural instinct
✅ Digestive stimulation
✅ Boredom or curiosity
✅ Occasional nausea
✅ Small amounts of naturally occurring fibre and nutrients

Interestingly, there is **no scientific evidence that dogs eat grass specifically because they are lacking nutrients in their diet.**

⚠️ **Be mindful of where your dog grazes.** Grass may be treated with fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, insecticides, or other chemicals that may not be safe for dogs to ingest. If your dog is a grass nibbler, always try to ensure your dog has access to untreated grass whenever possible.

While occasional grass eating is common, excessive grass consumption, frequent vomiting, lethargy, or other concerning symptoms should be discussed with your veterinarian.
