Meet Phyllis!
This sweet little puppy recently visited us at Warmland Animal Clinic because she had been dealing with ongoing soft stool. Other than that, she was bright, happy, and full of puppy energy-but her symptoms told us it was worth taking a closer look.
One of the most useful (and underrated!) diagnostic tools we have is a f***l float test. It’s a simple test where we examine a small stool sample under the microscope to look for parasite eggs and other organisms that may be causing gastrointestinal issues.
In Phyllis's case, the test gave us an answer: she was positive for coccidia, a common intestinal parasite that can cause diarrhea, especially in young animals. Once identified, she was started on treatment-and quickly began improving.
The great thing about getting a diagnosis is that it doesn't just help the patient in front of us. Once Phyllis's owner knew what was going on, they were able to start treatment right away and contact the shelter where she had been adopted. The shelter could then notify the families of her littermates so they could watch for signs and seek treatment if needed.
It's a good reminder that sometimes a quick, simple test can provide a lot of valuable information.
Many people are surprised to learn how common intestinal parasites are -and they don't just affect puppies and kittens. We can find parasites in dogs, cats, and many other pets. Sometimes the signs are obvious, but other times they're easy to miss.
Have you ever wondered if your pet's symptoms could be related to parasites?
Some common signs include:
- Changes in appetite
- Weight loss
- Diarrhea (with or without blood)
- Vomiting
- A dull or dry coat
- Scooting along the ground
- Visible worms or rice-like segments in the stool or around the rear end
- & In some cases there can be no symptoms at all!
Another reason we take parasites seriously is that some can spread between pets, and a few can even affect people.
When was the last time your pet had a f***l test? Give us a call - we're happy to help make your pet feel their very best!
