Horses & Nutrition

*Horses are known as non-rumiant herbivores
*Their bodies are designed to trickle feed, meaning they process small amounts of continously rather than eating large meals
*Because their bodies are constantly producing stomach acid they need constant access to food to maintain a healthy digestive system to prevent ulcers

Horses have amazing memories!
*they can remember people and other animals for decades
*horses have strong emotional memories. They can remember those who have treated them well
*because horses have such good long term memory, its hard to un-teach a fear or bad habit

This is why it is so crucial to keep positive reinforcement and build those lasting bonds.

FUN FACT FRIDAY!

*Horses teeth take up more space in their head then their brain.

* Horses teeth continue to grow over their life time. Horse teeth are hypsodont, meaning they have long crowns and continue to grow over time.

*Adult males have 40-44 teeth and mares 36 to 40 teeth.

*Veterinarians can estimate the age of a horse by their teeth.

We had the pleasure of having Lorraine Andres visit us recently to work with Phantom.

Phantom came to Old Friends Canada summer of 2025 unhandled and very scared.

Watching his progress with the dedication of volunteers Sheppe Pharis and Daniela Pharis has been amazing.

We are excited for his future!
