🎃🐾 HALLOWEEN IS HERE! LET'S KEEP THOSE DOGS SAFE! 👻

Halloween is a whole lot of fun for us humans, but for our dogs? It can be a pretty strange evening! 😂

Think about it. People showing up at the door dressed like questionable creatures, doorbells ringing nonstop, excited kids running around, decorations making weird noises & enough chocolate floating around to make any dog think they've hit the jackpot.

So, before the Halloween chaos begins, here are a few things worth keeping in mind! 👇

🎃 The front door is NOT a free for all!

With trick or treaters coming & going, there's plenty of opportunity for a dog to slip outside. Use a leash, baby gate, kennel or another safe space to prevent accidental escapes. Make sure identification tags & microchip information are up to date, too!

👻 Your dog doesn't need to greet everyone!

Seriously. They don't. Halloween is not the night to practise greeting 87 strangers wearing masks 😂

If your dog struggles with excitement, fear, barking or impulse control, give them some space away from the action. There's absolutely nothing wrong with letting them enjoy a quiet evening in another room.

🍫 Keep the candy out of reach!

Chocolate, xylitol (also called birch sugar) in some sugar free treats, raisins & certain other goodies can be dangerous for dogs. Candy wrappers can cause problems, too. Keep those treat bags somewhere curious noses can't reach!

🐾 Costumes are optional, not mandatory!

Some dogs couldn't care less about wearing a costume. Others would rather file a formal complaint with management 😂

If you're dressing your dog up, make sure they can move, breathe, see & hear comfortably. Watch for signs of stress & don't force it if they're uncomfortable.

🦇 Be mindful of decorations!

Electrical cords, candles, glow sticks, fake cobwebs & small decorations can all create hazards for curious dogs. Keep anything potentially dangerous out of reach.

🚶 Plan your evening walk accordingly!

If your dog is uncomfortable with crowds, unusual noises or unpredictable movement, consider getting your walk in before the trick or treating begins.

And remember, a person wearing a giant inflatable dinosaur costume might be hilarious to you, but your dog may have some VERY legitimate concerns. 😂

🧡 MOST IMPORTANTLY: Advocate for your dog!

Your dog doesn't need to participate in every holiday activity. They don't need to meet every trick or treater, tolerate every costume or be comfortable with every spooky decoration.

Sometimes the best Halloween plan is a good chew, a comfortable kennel, some background noise & absolutely zero involvement in the neighbourhood festivities.

A safe, uneventful Halloween is a successful Halloween! 🐾

🎃🐾 3rd Annual Passionate Paws Client Halloween Party Recap! 👻🧡

Well, that was a HOWLING good time! 😂🐾

Our 3rd Annual Client Halloween Party was filled with great people, awesome dogs, delicious food, questionable apple-eating decisions & just the right amount of Halloween chaos! 🤣

We packed a whole lot of fun into one evening!

🍽️ Potluck Dinner: Because what's a party without a ridiculous amount of delicious food?!

🎶 Musical Place with Distractions: A true test of impulse control, patience & the ability to pretend absolutely NOTHING interesting is happening around you. 😂

🍎 Bobbing for Apples & Beef Liver: We quickly discovered that the dogs had some VERY strong opinions about the menu. Beef liver? ABSOLUTELY. Apples? How dare we. 🤣 Apparently, healthy eating was not on their Halloween agenda!

🎨 Pumpkin Paw Print Art: A little creativity, a few painted paws & some adorable keepsakes to take home!

🐕 Dog Costume Contest: Some seriously fantastic costumes & a whole lot of cuteness! A HUGE thank you to Wag's for donating the gift cards for our winner! 🧡

🧙 Human Costume Contest: Because why should the dogs get to have all the fun?! We love a good excuse to make the humans look ridiculous, too!

🍪 Dog Treat Jar Guessing Contest: How many dog cookies are in the jar? Apparently, harder to figure out than you'd think!

🍫 Human Treat Jar Guessing Contest: Same concept, but with M&M's & considerably more human motivation 😂

But beyond all the games, costumes, food & laughter, my favourite part was seeing everyone come together.

One of the things I love most about Passionate Paws is the community we've built. Watching clients connect, laugh, cheer each other on & just enjoy an evening with their dogs is pretty darn special ❤️

A HUGE thank you to everyone who came out, brought food, dressed up, participated in our ridiculous activities & helped make our 3rd Annual Halloween Party such a fun evening!

We appreciate you all more than you know. You're what makes this little community of ours so awesome! 🧡🐾

🤍 Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do with your dog is nothing at all 🤍

We focus so much on exercise, training, enrichment, socialization & keeping our dogs busy that we sometimes forget to teach them an equally important skill....how to REST.

Not every moment needs to be filled with activity, training, or adventure. Rest is important. Decompression is important. Learning to settle & simply exist without needing constant entertainment is an important life skill too.

Here's the thing, settling is a skill. Not just something dogs should automatically know how to do.

Dogs need opportunities to practice being calm in a safe environment without constantly being entertained, prompted or stimulated. Learning to settle can help dogs develop better emotional regulation, navigate everyday downtime & transition more comfortably between activity & rest.

☆A few things to keep in mind:

🐾 Meet their needs 1st. Appropriate exercise, mental enrichment, potty breaks & social opportunities still matter. Rest isn't a substitute for meeting your dog's needs.

🐾 Reward calm moments. Quietly reinforce relaxed behaviour when your dog chooses to lie down, soften their body, or settle on their own. We don't always need to be asking our dogs to DO something. Sometimes, we can acknowledge when they're doing a whole lot of nothing.

🐾 Make rest feel safe. Provide a comfortable space where your dog can relax without being disturbed or pressured to interact. Settling shouldn't feel like a battle or a constant stream of commands.

🐾 Don't confuse exhaustion with regulation. A dog who's physically worn out isn't necessarily a dog who knows how to settle. We want to build the ability to relax, not simply exercise them until they have nothing left.

🐾 Practice outside of moments of chaos. If your dog struggles to switch off, start in a quiet, familiar environment & gradually build the skill. It's much harder to learn how to relax when you're already overwhelmed.

A well rounded dog isn't just one who can go on adventures, play with other dogs, & learn new things. It's also one who can switch off, feel safe & comfortably do nothing at all.

& if your dog struggles to settle, constantly paces, or becomes frustrated when nothing is happening, they may need some help learning this skill. Start small, keep expectations realistic, & seek professional guidance if settling is consistently difficult.

So here's your reminder that sometimes, the best thing you can do with your dog is grab a blanket, get comfortable, & enjoy a little couch time together 🤍

Because a good relationship isn't built on doing more. It's built on trust, connection, & feeling safe enough to just BE.

The goal isn't a dog who's too tired to move. It's a dog who feels safe enough to rest.

Good training isn't just about teaching our dogs what TO do. It's also about helping them learn when it's okay to do nothing 🐾

⭐️🐾 SOCIALIZATION ISN’T ABOUT MAKING FRIENDS 🐾⭐️

Somewhere along the way, we started treating socialization as though it means our dogs should want to meet every dog, greet every person & interact with everything around them.

But that’s not what it means.

Socialization is about learning how to exist comfortably in the world. It’s experiencing different environments, sounds, smells, people & dogs while developing the confidence to navigate those experiences.

Sometimes that means playing with another dog. Sometimes it means walking past one without feeling the need to say hello. Sometimes it means exploring a new trail, taking in the environment & simply enjoying the adventure.

Your dog doesn’t need to interact with everything to have a positive experience.

In fact, learning that they can be around other dogs without needing to engage is an incredibly valuable life skill.

We want dogs who can think, regulate their emotions, respect boundaries & make good choices, even when there are exciting things happening around them.

That’s why we focus on more than just interaction. We focus on neutrality, confidence, communication & the ability to simply be.

Because a well socialized dog isn’t necessarily the dog who wants to be friends with everyone.

It’s the dog who can comfortably navigate the world, whether they’re making friends or not.

That’s the kind of life skill worth building 💖

The sky over Blackfalds was putting on a show for tonight’s Pack Walk, & honestly, we couldn’t have asked for much better weather for nearing the end of October.

Winter is coming Alberta. We’ll take every last bit of this while we can 🤩
