Attention all dog owners crossing from Canada into the USA: The CDC has introduced new regulations effective August 1st, 2024. Here are the key requirements:
• Dogs must be over 6 months old.
• They must be microchipped.
• The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination.
To cross the border, you will need:
1. Certification Paperwork: Completed at a veterinary clinic after an examination, this form must be finalized within 30 days prior to entering the US and is only valid for 30 days. A second signature from a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Veterinarian is required.
2. Veterinary records or receipts from the past 6 months.
3. CDC Dog Import Form: Available from July 15, 2024, on the CDC website, this form must be completed 2–10 days before travel.
Different rules apply to dogs coming from countries other than Canada or those that have been outside of Canada in the last 6 months. If uncertain, consult the US CDC’s DogBot: CDC DogBot.
We are awaiting further guidance from the CFIA and will provide updates via social media.
Contact us at least two weeks before travel to book an appointment for your pet’s examination and form processing. We cannot accommodate same-day form requests. If your pet requires a microchip and/or rabies vaccine, please reach out to us.
For pets traveling to countries other than the USA, initiate the process at least three months prior to travel. Visit the CFIA website for more information: CFIA Travelling with Pets.
For breeders and importers, please visit the website for detailed requirements, documentation, and applicable regulations.
