With all of the talk lately surrounding color, I want to clear up something about yellows! It is true that Labradors come in only 3 colors, black yellow and chocolate. There are always a few people that say "what about my AKC registered fox red" or "well I have a white lab." The umbrella term "yellow" includes shades from light cream all the way to fox red. They are not separate from yellow, they are just varying shades of yellow (all permitted within the standard!). This applies to shades of chocolate as well. Light brown all the way to dark brown are acceptable in chocolates. Black is just black. A small white patch is permissible but not desired. "Silvers, charcoals, and champagnes" are dilute forms of the three base colors and are NOT permitted per the standard. Ethical breeders will not produce these colors because they test for the dilute gene before any pairings (so no, we are not hard culling puppies).
