Week 2 of Zeus and Athena’s puppy BnT. Generalizing the foundations from the first week, building on play and starting to integrate them back together. Both dogs are very different and feed off of each others insecurities so making sure both were able to make consistently good choices and emotionally regulate was essential before adding them back together.

Rooster! Ruby did lessons with me a year and a half ago and this was of the first things we taught her and her mom. Ruby constantly jumped all over people in excitement and yelling “down” and “off” meant nothing to her. By teaching her a “paws up” command we were able to solidify for Ruby what “off” meant. After she got this down we generalized the “off” with different surfaces and only when she was showing us she understood the alternative behaviour did we layer in correction. When criteria is clear and rules are enforced a year can go by without formal training and it’s still all there 🩷

Off leash season is coming back! Why gamble with your dogs life when you can train reliable recall. Recall saves lives🩵🩵🩵

Willow! She is both a private lesson and walk & train client. Willow had very low confidence around new people and would bark/jump backwards when she felt unsure. She didn’t walk nicely on lead not because she was trying to pull but because she was so in her head. We decided to do walk & trains when I noticed how often she hides behind mom when scared. I want her to realize she can be brave without mom. Double leashed for safety, she is starting to learn the game and taking food from me hence why I am treating so heavily 🙈 Our last lesson with her mom we tackled Home Depot and she did better than either of us expected. From barking at anyone who got close or interacted with mom and being unable to focus in the park she goes to regularly, to playing with me, a new person in a new environment with people around while her mom is there. She will never be a dog that seeks out human interaction but she’s learning that we got her back and being scared is ok. it’s what you do after that matters 🩵

It’s overwhelming the amount of dogs in the system that are not, in my opinion, candidates for BE but also will require ALOT of hard work by a new owner. Getting a puppy client with owners that want to start their dog off right and do it correctly from the beginning is so much fun. Stop waiting for the dog to be too much and be proactive!

Day train Bruce🩷 Bruce is starting this week with our puppy foundations day train program. He will come hang out with my pack for the day a couple times a week while he learns that the crate is a cool place and that outside is where we go potty. As weeks progress he will learn things such as leash walking and recall foundations, safe interaction with other dogs, cooperative care for grooming/handling and lots more! He is still an infant so right now will just be focused on positive experiences around dogs and people from a safe distance and learning that the crate is the best place in the world!

Bear out on the town! He struggled a lot with over excitement around dogs and wouldn’t take treats and barked at people. He did great seeing reactive dogs in the park and lots of people at 🩷

Training can feel overwhelming, especially when starting out or when progress is slow. Here are some effective strategies to enhance your training sessions🩵

🩵1. Setting Clear Goals. defining what we want to achieve with our dogs will help you focus your efforts and track progress this also helps to make sure we are looking at the big picture and not getting stuck on the small stuff.

🤍2. Be Consistent: Consistency is key in dog training as it is with anything. Training is not linear and regression will happen, staying consistent with the type of training and use the same commands and cues will help to avoid confusion for your dog and provide clear boundaries.

🩵3. Genralizing behaviours. Dogs learn in various environments, so practice commands in different settings, not just indoors or during training sessions. For example, incorporate a sit-stay before crossing the street during walks.

🤍4. Focus on the relationship you have with your dog. Not all training needs to be working through issues. When we start focusing on the bond between ourselves and our dogs, we improve communication and understanding between us, making training more effective and enjoyable for both parties.

🩵5. Less is more! I hear “I don’t have time to train my dog” a lot but not all training needs to be structured nor does it need to be long. Even if your training for the day consists of adding in threshold boundaries before going in the yard or 10 minutes of place work while you watch TV, these small sessions add up!

🤍6. Stay Positive! Keep training sessions positive for both you and your dog. If a session isn’t going well, end on a positive note with a behavior your dog excels at, then reassess and break down the problem into manageable steps.
