It’s been awhile (sorry, super busy these days!). We are again a turtle drop off if you find one injured 🐢 brake for turtles!

Saving adult turtles is key to the survival of Ontario turtle species. It is estimated to take upwards of 59 years for a single turtle to replace itself!

For this reason, Turtles Kingston has created the Trauma Response Program. Through this initiative, designated Kingston area Veterinary Clinics have been designated to act as "Temporary Holding Stations". This means that the clinics have agreed to hold any injured or dead turtle that is delivered by the public, until a volunteer can safely deliver it to Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre.

These holding stations do not offer medical care for the turtle - but a temporary safe haven. An intake form for Sandy Pines must be completed upon the turtle's arrival at the holding station. This is a mandatory form required by law, which must include the contact information of the rescuer and details about the location where the turtle was discovered. This information is crucial to the successful release of the turtle back to its rightful home after receiving care and rehabilitation.

If you come across a turtle that has been killed on the road — there is still a chance to save eggs that may still be intact and viable inside. Eggs can be extracted within 24 hours of the mother passing, so time is of the essence!

🚨 Turtles Kingston cannot be reached by phone at this time, however if you have any questions regarding the program please feel free to reach out to our Trauma Program Coordinator directly by email at [email protected].

Some days are still easier than others. Just the other day I said goodbye to a wonderful patient I first saw 10 years ago when he was just an 8 week puppy for his first visit. Truly a privilege to know him and his family all those years as I helped him cross the bridge and knowing he had a wonderful life and we were able to help him have peace. 🐾

Many people add dogs to their home at the holidays. Aside from it being a long term commitment, not every dog is a good fit for every home. 🐾

Thinking about adding a second (or third or fourth lol) dog to your home?
Introducing a new dog to your home requires careful planning to ensure a smooth transition for both the new pet and any existing animals.

1. Prepare by creating a safe space: Set up a designated area for the new dog, such as a crate or a specific room with their bed, food, water, and toys.

2. Use a Leash and Neutral Location for Initial Meetings: When introducing the new dog to existing dogs, keep both on a leash during the first meeting to maintain control and meet somewhere neutral outside the home.

3. Introduce Gradually: Allow the dogs to sniff each other and observe their body language. Look for signs of friendliness, such as relaxed tails and playful behavior.

4. Supervise Initial Interactions: Monitor their interactions closely, especially during the first few days. Be ready to intervene if necessary to prevent escalation.

5. Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward both dogs with treats and praise for calm and friendly behavior towards each other. This helps create positive associations.

6. Give Each Dog Individual Attention: Spend quality time with each dog separately to prevent jealousy and help the new dog bond with you.

7. Establish Routines: Create a consistent routine for feeding, walks, and playtime. This helps the new dog feel secure and understand what to expect.

8. Be Patient: Adjustments can take time. Some dogs may take longer than others to acclimate to a new environment or to accept a new companion.

9. Monitor for Issues: Keep an eye on interactions and look for signs of stress or aggression. If conflicts arise, separate the dogs and try reintroducing them later.

10. Gradually Introduce the Home Environment: Once the initial introductions are successful, allow the new dog to explore the home while continuing to supervise.

11. Veterinary Check-up: Schedule a vet visit for the new dog to ensure they are healthy and up-to-date on vaccinations. This is especially important if you have other pets.

Today’s feel good story; our clinic made our donation official through our community grant program to help out The Inclusive Play Project! They still have a long way to go to reach their goals but every bit helps!

Today we made it official with a donation to the inclusiveplayproject! Shannon and Dr. Llera met with Rachel, one of the directors, to present them with a cheque towards their goal. Once a year, the KVC team can submit a grant application for a local community project or organization. This year Dr. Llera suggested The Inclusive Play Project which is looking to build a unique (to Kingston) playground for children and families. Check out their page to learn more and see how you can help!

Hey ther! Another chance to help out in the community. 🐾 Call us at the clinic, spots are filling up!
