💔I almost lost my dog because of something that could have 100% been prevented and that breaks my heart.
👉If you know me, you KNOW there is absolutely no worries that I’d ever let my dog get pregnant. I work in rescue and I see firsthand how many unwanted dogs and pups there already are. But there’s another HUGE reason to spay your female dog and not put it off… and that’s pyometra.
My girl Bailey is 9 years old and recently developed pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection. Hers had actually ruptured. I’ve known about pyometra for years and that fired me up to get her spayed (obviously). We had appointments booked… and then life happened. Bills came up. Other emergencies happened. She went into heat. Then she needed to lose weight first. It was scary, overwhelming, and easy to keep pushing back.
But pyometra is 100% preventable with spay surgery. And in a world where we can’t prevent so many things, this is one thing we can and I didn’t. I advocate for spay/neuter to prevent unwanted litters, but people also need to know that the risk of pyometra rises as dogs get older, and so do the cost and risks of surgery. It is NOT something to wait on “for someday.” I know spaying can be costly, but the price for emergency surgery will be easily $3000+(into the $5000s or more in other places) and the risk of losing your pup. I don't want this post to scare people, but I've been so scared about it happening for a long time and it actually did... 💔
I am unbelievably grateful Bailey is still here, but I almost lost my little shadow because of something that didn’t have to happen. Please learn from me. If you’ve been delaying spaying your girl like I did, don’t wait. They depend on us to protect them. 💛🐾

⚠️ Signs of Pyometra to Watch For
These can appear 2–8 weeks after a heat cycle:
• seems “off,” tired, or not herself
• drinking a LOT more water / peeing more
• not wanting to eat
• vomiting
• swollen or painful belly
• discharge from the v***a (but sometimes there is NONE)
• fever or just acting unwell - shaking, panting
👉 This is an emergency. If you notice these signs, call a vet immediately and say you’re worried about pyometra. Things escalade quick.
👉 Treatment is usually emergency spay surgery.
👉 Spaying prevents it completely.
