Nala came to to see us after she'd been having some back end pain following play with her brother dog or competing in sports.

We worked with her and her mom to help bring down her pain, build up her muscle stability and get her back to her favourite activities!

Summer Tip #6 of our More Good Days Summer Series are a few Hot Day Activity Ideas!

1. Indoor Strengthening Exercises

2. Hide and Treat - put your dog in a sit and wait then hide treats for your dog to seek out in the house. My kids love this one with Maggie!

3. Find a shady walking spot that maybe also has a place to take a cooling swim afterwards

4. Set up a backyard water oasis! Whether it's a kiddy/doggy pool, sprinkler or just the hose, have fun in your own backyard!

5. Create your own DIY dog puzzles. In this photo Maggie is searching for treats in an Amazon box stuffed with old strips of fabric!

It's the little moments that create lasting memories.

I can tell from the state of the grass and garden it was a hot dry summer. But what I remember is my son crawling over and picking up the frisbee and trying to get Maggie to take it. He knew it was her toy. While she didn't really engage, this sweet little moment is one I cherish.

What are some of your favourite summer memories with your dog?

It's very trendy now to be able to take your dog with you to many restaurants, patios and breweries. Many offer special treats, menus and fresh water.

But what does your dog actually want?

Maybe they don't like crowds.

Maybe it's too much action.

Maybe it's just too hot.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you shoulder. Maybe the best place for your dog this summer is at home. That's where you'll find Maggie!

Did you know that pointing a fan at a dog's face can help reduce the feeling of breathlessness?

This might not be the best way of cooling them off like a human (their faces aren't sweating!). However, research has shown that blowing air at a human's face can "fool the brain" into believing it is not short of breath.

This is a great trick for any dog that has breathing issues like those with short muzzles or laryngeal issues.

Summer time brings more activity, more outings and a big change in our routines.

All of these can flare-up arthritis pain but if we aren't paying attention we can miss them, allowing our dogs to suffer in silence.

If we recognize the signs we can take action to help our dogs thrive!

I was discussing with an owner recently how long to expect it to take for their dog's to recover from injury and he said something quite profound.

"They only live 11-13 years or so and it takes 8 weeks for them to recover. It doesn't seem fair."

And it's not fair but by getting some help with recover we can level the playing ground.

Comment "callback" if you are ready to stop wasting time and take action.

Swimming can be a great summer activity, both for keeping cool and getting a little exercise.

Rarely am I concerned with swimming itself being problematic but rather the getting in and out of the water.

Here Maggie is using a great inflated dog pool plank (affectionately called the "puppy plank"). Maggie uses it both to get in and out of the water. So no run and jump in and no trying to get vertical to climb the later out (though she has in the past!).

Swimming at the beach? Be wary of slippery surfaces or river rock shores that dogs can get feet caught in.

It's all fun and games until someone ends up in a cone...
