If you don’t have the ball or food in your hand, will your dog still willingly engage with you in public? Or will you become insignificant, and your dog find more entertaining activities?

This is a crucial question because if you’re not worth anything to your dog without bribes, how can you expect them to listen and stay obedient when they forget you exist?

Training is only 30% of the equation, while the remaining 70% is relationship. Without a strong bond, you can say goodbye to any built behaviours without the influence of food or bribery.

Ensure your dog enjoys your company, both with and without food and toys. If you’re not valuable to your dog, you’ll always find it more challenging to obtain a well-rounded, obedient dog than someone who values a strong relationship first.

‼️ Important message to all clients ‼️

This is a very bittersweet post for me to make, but I can’t put it off any longer.

July will be our last month of servicing Fort McMurray.

For once, we will be adding a 2-legged family member instead of a 4-legged. With our precious new addition arriving at the end of the summer, we have decided that it’s best to move back to Ontario to raise our family.

There is very limited space left in July for day training as I will be lessening my workload before the move.

We have 1 board and train spot available to begin July 1st for a 2-3 week stay, for a puppy or basic obedience package. We will fit as many private sessions in as possible before the move to finish up any training we have going with current clients.

I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for supporting my business and allowing me to grow it to what it is now. It’s been a dream come true being able to help so many dogs and owners reach their potential, and I’m thankful for each and every one of you.

📣 As we mentioned yesterday, it’s crucial that we meet our dogs’ breed-specific exercise requirements.

Our question yesterday was, “How can you tell what they need depending on the line?” It’s a great question! Each breed and line of dog requires different things and has varying energy levels, drives, temperaments, interests, and endurance.

Typically a show line golden or lab is much more docile, happy to live more of that couch potatoe, family dog life people know them for. However a working line golden or lab will not only be built slightly different structurally they will also be different mentally for what they require. A breeding program for showline dogs focuses almost solely on structure and temperament as that is what matters in the conformation ring. A working line dog will have higher energy and drive fulfillment requirements. They need to be put to work to be satisfied before they are willingly going to fall asleep on your couch.

While this doesn’t mean every single show line dog will be calm and every working line dog will need extreme levels of fulfillment it is an important question to ask your breeder so you can be sure you’re getting the right pet for your home and are prepared and able to fulfill all their needs. Foam Mouth Friday! 💦🌊

Let’s ❗️Talk ❗️About how important toy drive is and why/how do we get these dogs so excited over a simple toy.
1️⃣ First thing you’ll notice when you step foot onto a working dog field is the toys and the dog’s absolute obsession with them. How though? Everyone has toys for their dogs! Why are these so special that the dogs will complete endless tasks to achieve a few moments of play with it?
Truth is.. it’s not just that toy; it’s the relationship and the experiences associated with it. The easiest way to put it is that these toys are a form of celebration. 🎉 They are not accessible 24/7, these are special toys that only come out during work and are only offered with the experience of a shared celebration when they have offered us good behaviours.
So, why is the toy important, can we not just use food? Food is always an option for training and used quite often, but for most dogs food drive only goes so far. We can ask for more from our dogs and we can create a more enthusiastic reward experience for the extra hard work with toys. Food can be exciting, but a toy involves play, body language, an outlet for excitement and fun relationship building.
