It is always upsetting when you need to take your pet to an emergency hospital, but it is important to be prepared if you ever have to go.

An Emergency Veterinary Hospital works a lot like a human hospital where it is a triage system of each patient. This triage system entails your pet to be seen by an RVT and assessed for level of severity. If your pet is stable (or more stable) than other pets that come through you may be pushed down the list and be waiting longer than you would like.

The more severe and urgent the case, the faster your pet will be seen. Some of the more severe and life threatening conditions include but are not limited to; difficulty breathing, collapse/syncope and/or seizures, a blocked cat, trauma (i.e., hit by cat), possible bloat and even a toxin ingestion.

We understand the stress and concern you experience for your pet and their condition but please remember that we must take the more critical cases first. This does not mean your pet will not be seen, it just simply means it may be a several hour wait unfortunately. It is recommended to call ahead to your hospital if possible to ensure they are fully open, if they suggest waiting until morning to see your regular vet (to avoid you waiting for a long period of time), ensure they have the possible services available that your pet may require and most importantly it allows the staff to know what will be coming through the door and be as prepared as possible i.e., gurney if needed, prepare oxygen, and ensure extra staff are available especially if CPR is a possibility.

Some less severe situations that are ideal to call ahead, or monitor include but are not limited to; ear and skin concerns, and vomiting or diarrhea especially if there has only been 1 episode and your pet seems otherwise fine.

Please be patient with your hospital staff. They are all doing their absolute best to have your pet seen as quickly as possible! Unfortunately, like a human hospital things are ever-changing and you never know what may walk through those Emergency doors that can alter the direction of the day.

Feline vaccines work in a very similar manner to canine. These vaccines are especially important if your cat is indoor/outdoor.

The core vaccines for cats are known as FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis aka feline herpes, calicivirus, and panleukopenia aka feline distemper) and of course Rabies. The feline vaccine schedule is the same as dogs; start at about 6 weeks of age and boosters every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks and at 16 weeks they receive their final booster and rabies.

Additional vaccines important for your cat if you are a multi-cat household or they are indoor/outdoor include; FeLV (feline leukemia virus) - especially in kittens, FIP (feline infectious peritonitis which can be potentially fatal, and Bordetella - especially in the multi-cat household.

Much like the Rabies vaccine for dogs, it is a legal requirement for cats to be up-to-date on this vaccine at minimum. It is also true that should your cat bite a human they can be placed under quarantine if their rabies is not up-to-date.

Vaccines are very important for your dogs, cats and even rabbits, especially their initial vaccines to build up their immunity and prevent deadly diseases.

For dogs it is critical they receive their ‘core’ vaccine, DA2PP (Distemper, Adenovirus 2 aka hepatitis, parvovirus & parainfluenza) and Rabies vaccines. As a puppy, the typical vaccine schedule is DA2PP at 6 weeks and every 4 weeks until 16 weeks old, when they will also receive their rabies vaccine. These vaccines can then be updated at annual appointments (sometimes every 3 years, depending on the manufacturer).

Additional vaccines important for dogs include Bordetella (kennel cough) especially if you will be boarding your dog, day care, or taking them to dog parks often. This vaccine will help prevent or lessen symptoms should your dog contract kennel cough, but unfortunately since there are many strains it is impossible to target every single one (much like the human flu vaccine). Leptospirosis is another important vaccine for your dog especially if you live where there is a lot of wildlife present and/or standing water – this is how the infection is typically contracted. Bordetella and Leptospirosis are not considered part of the ‘core’ vaccines but are beneficial in the above mentioned situations.

Don’t forget Rabies is required by law! If something happens with your dog and they end up biting a human or another dog and their rabies is not up-to-date your pet can be placed in quarantine.

Have you ever heard the term ‘Zoonotic’ this means it is an infectious disease that can be spread from animals to humans and vice-versa.

Our cuddly friends have several diseases that we can acquire from them, some of these include:
- Rabies (bite from infected animal)
- Leptospirosis ( spread through infected urine, can be in soil or water or direct contact with infected urine)
- Ringworm (contact with animal, only if you have broken skin or pre-existing skin conditions such as eczema)
- Giardia (contact with animal, particularly f***s or saliva/licking)
- Salmonella (shed in saliva and f***s and infects environment)
- Toxoplasmosis (contaminated cat f***s; especially dangerous for pregnant women!)
- Q Fever ( breathing in dust from contaminated by infected urine, f***s or milk)
- E.Coli ( contact with infected animal urine, f***s and saliva)

These are just a few of the infectious diseases we as humans can contract from our dogs, cats and even wildlife. It is important that if your pet is diagnosed with any condition to speak with your veterinary team to ensure how to best keep you and your family healthy.

Our pets, although we love them like a human, their body systems do not react to certain things the same way that ours does. Many common things in our life are toxic to our pets and it is important to seek medical attention should your pet ingest these items.

Some of the more common food toxicities & risks include:
- Chocolate - the more pure (dark chocolate) the more concerning it is. It is the theobromine that is the toxic aspect of chocolate.
- Signs & symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, excessive urination, panting or restlessness and an increased heart rate, in more severe cases you may also see muscle tremors and seizures.
- Grapes - including raisins and currants can all cause kidney failure in dogs.
- Signs & symptoms: vomiting, decreased appetite, lethargy +/- diarrhea can be seen early, typically within 12-24 hrs. As time progresses the kidney damage worsens and other signs and symptoms you may see include but not limited to; increased thirst and urination, not eating much, and you may notice your pets breath has an ammonia smell to it.
- Alliums - this plant family includes onion, garlic, leek, chive and more. Full onset of symptoms can take up to several days to appear.
- Signs & symptoms: gastroenteritis, vomiting and diarrhea, drooling and nausea, irritation of the mouth and abdominal pain.
- Most concerning factor: these plants will target red blood cells in your pet (which carry oxygen throughout the body) and cause them to degrade and burst. This will lead to anemia, in which case you will see signs which may include an increased heart rate but low respiratory rate with greater effort to breath, weakness, kidney damage (may see discoloured urine), and pale gums.

If you witness your pet ingest any of these foods, call your vet or emergency hospital right away as inducing vomiting as soon as possible will reduce the risk of damage to organs.

THC toxicities in pets has become a lot more commonplace since its legalization in Canada. Many owners will panic because the pet will typically present with neurological-type signs, however if you bring them to the vet a urine test can be performed in house to determine if it is THC or something else that may be occurring.

Signs your pet may have ingested THC:
- Wobbly and uneasy on feet
- Not walking straight
- Hyper aesthetic
- Dribbling urine
- Shanking
- Nervous
- Lethargic and/or in a stupor with higher levels

With low doses the pet can typically sleep it off in a quiet, dark room at home they may not be back to themselves for about 48 hours, but each reaction is different so they could be back to normal sooner. With higher doses, especially with smaller animals they may require hospitalization for treatment and monitoring.
The form in which the pet ingested (i.e. edibles, w**d cigarette, leaves from tea or other homemade products) will also affect how the pet reacts and if treatment is required.
It is very important that if you have any THC products in the house you do your best to keep it up and away from where pets can potentially access it, of course situations occur and sometimes our little friends are more sneaky than we would like. It is also possible that they pick something up on a walk or while outside, so just being observant on walks, especially if your dog likes to typically eat things on the floor such as sticks, leaves etc.
It can be very scary, but in most cases the pet is fine and typically does not require hospitalization but it is recommended to have them tested and brought in for proper assessment if your dog is showing signs of possible ingestion or if you witness an ingestion of THC.

A**l glands are two small oval shaped glands in the a**s of the dog that release a fairly foul smelling odour when released. These are typically released when a dog goes to the bathroom and helps to spread their scent and ‘mark their territory’ but can also release from being overly stressed.

Not all dogs can fully release their a**l glands which can cause issues such as a peria**l abscess or a**l gland abscess. If this happens you will need to seek veterinary help. This abscess is puss filled and typically happens when an a**l gland is clogged or infected and is painful for your pet.

Signs that a**l gland issues are occuring include but not limited to; scooting their bottom on the floor, excessive licking or biting at the area, possible blood in stool, and straining to defecate. If you notice this happening, please go see your veterinarian to ensure an abscess has not formed and the glands may just need manual expression from a trained professional. If there is an abscess, it will need to be treated. This treatment may include antibiotics, flushing of the gland and area, and possibly manual expression depending on location and severity lancing and flushing the abscess may also be required. Your dog may require more frequent manual expression after this to avoid recurrence.
Some ways to manage a**l gland issues include but are not limited to; diet change (high fiber diet), frequent manual expression, and in some severe cases-surgical removal of the a**l glands.

Keep an eye on your pup for the signs of a**l gland issues and contact your veterinary team if you have any questions or concerns. It is rather common that dogs experience a**l gland issues at some point in life.

Ticks are present in temperatures of 4℃ and above, however in the last few years studies have shown that they are coming out at temperatures of 0℃!

Ticks can be active from as early as mid-may until as late as mid November depending on temperatures. Ticks like to live in tall grass and wooded areas and have been seen in Southern Ontario more in the last couple of years.
Ticks can latch onto your pet or you and survive on a blood meal. Some tick-borne diseases commonly seen in humans and animals include; Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis or even Ehrlichiosis. This is why it is very important to check not only yourself but also your pet after spending time outside. Be sure to check your pet over very well including between their toes, the groin area, and around ears, ticks like to hide in these spots especially in dogs with long hair, they can be easy to miss!

What to do if you find a tick on your dog or cat:
- It is critical the tick is removed properly and that their head does not get stuck inside of your pet as it can cause further damage
- If you are going to remove it yourself, it is ideal to use a tick remover which can be bought at any pet store or most vet clinics have them available for their clients. Be sure you know how to properly use the device beforehand because there are several different types of tick removers.
- If you are unsure how to properly remove a tick, it is best to seek veterinary help!
- Your pet should also have bloodwork run 4-6 weeks post exposure to see if any diseases were transmitted.

It is ideal to run blood work each year before tick season to make sure your pet does not have any current disease associated with ticks and mosquitoes such as Lyme disease or heartworm. If/when this bloodwork comes back as negative you should place your pet on prevention for flea, tick and heartworm. This can be purchased through your vet!

Don’t forget, ticks can bite you, your dog, or your cat! The bigger the tick is, the longer it has been feeding!
