The best breeder-owner relationships have one thing in common: an open door.

When you purchase a puppy from an ethical breeder, you're not just buying a dog; you're gaining someone who has invested years into producing that puppy and who will care about them for the rest of its life.

Your dog’s breeder should never be someone you cut off, block, or avoid. Blocking, ignoring, or avoiding your breeder after breaking your commitments doesn't solve the problem; it avoids accountability. Integrity means having the difficult conversation and doing what's right for the dog.

They should be the first person you call when you have questions, need training advice, face a medical concern, or if life takes an unexpected turn.

A responsible puppy buyer understands that the commitment doesn't end when they take their puppy home. They honor their word, respect the contract they signed, and recognize that those agreements exist to protect the dog; not to control the owner.

No breeder expects everything to be perfect. Dogs are challenging. Life changes. Mistakes happen.

What matters is communication.

If you're struggling, reach out.

If your circumstances have changed, be honest.

If you can no longer provide the puppy the life you promised it; and its breeder; honor your commitment and give your breeder the opportunity to help.

Ethical breeders would much rather welcome one of their dogs home than see it in a situation where its needs are not being met.

Open communication isn't about control. It's about trust, accountability, and doing what's best for the dog.

A responsible breeder keeps their door open for life. A responsible puppy buyer keeps the lines of communication open, honors their word, respects the commitments they made, and understands that asking for help or returning the puppy is never a sign of failure, it's a sign of someone with integrity and great character.

At the end of the day, the breeder and owner should be on the same team, working toward the same goal; a happy, healthy and fulfilled dog. Because that's what ethical breeding has always been about.

WHAT A BREEDER NEVER SAYS OUT LOUD....!!!!
🤔 People often think that a breeder lives among perfect dogs. But they forget everything that goes into bringing these little miracles into the world. Photos are sweet, but the reality is intense and demanding.

✨ Every birth is a lottery.
You can prepare, plan, and study everything… but not a single delivery goes exactly as hoped.
Every time it feels like the first time, even after years of experience.

😢 Death is our greatest enemy.
A bitch who develops complications, a puppy that doesn't make it…

It happens unexpectedly and breaks your heart every time.

✨ Using a good stud dog costs money and effort.
Travel expenses, matings, tests, nighttime care…

And then hoping that everything goes well: diarrhea, infections, stunted growth.
Breeding is an investment: financial, emotional, and physical.

✨Bottle feeding? Cute, yes… for the first five minutes.

But after that, feeding every 2–3 hours, day and night, for weeks.

That is pure survival mode, with a whole lot of energy as salvation.

🤦‍♀️ People often view puppies as “business”:

“Number of puppies × price = profit!”

But they forget the:

• Health & Genetic testing
• Matings
• Shows
• Training
• Nutrition
• Veterinarian
• Care and hygiene
• Photoshoots, advertising, websit
• Kilograms of food and mountains of poop!!🙈

What is left? Rarely a gold bar. Let alone a decent hourly wage 😁

😴 Sleepless nights are inevitable.
No weekends, no vacation, no break.

🤫 Who really raises the puppies?

The bitch… AND the breeder.
Every small infection can threaten an entire litter.

😬 And the question “Why is it so expensive?”

If we got a euro for every time…

The dogs would be eating caviar instead of kibble or meat.

😵‍💫 Future owners always make us worried.
A puppy isn't a package you just send off.
We choose adopters carefully; sometimes we refuse, sometimes we wait longer.

🫥 Emotional fatigue?
You almost never see that.
The pressure, the responsibility, watching over every detail…

And the loneliness during an emergency.

🤐 Sometimes we want to quit.
After loss. After setbacks. After exhaustion.

And then a pup opens its little eyes… and everything starts all over again.
It is a passion that never lets you go!

🙏 The grief of loss…

We rarely talk about that.
But with every farewell, a piece of us dies with them. Yet we rise again, for the puppies that still need a home.

🥰 Yes, there are beautiful moments.
Yes, there is immense joy.
But behind every experienced breeder lies a path full of sleepless nights, tears…

And an unconditional love for these special animals.♥️🥰♥️

This is not talked about enough when choosing a breeder…

When people come looking for a puppy, I notice the same questions again and again:
How much? What color? Big or small? Show line or working line?

Those questions are understandable—but after more than 50 years living with dogs, I can tell you this with absolute certainty:

That is not where a dog’s future is decided.

What truly shapes the dog you will live with for the next 10, 12, sometimes 14 years… happens long before the puppy ever meets you.

What Happens Before 8 Weeks Matters More Than Most People Realize

At Southernwind, puppies are not “waiting to be sold.”
They are being formed.

Their nervous systems, confidence, stress tolerance, curiosity, and emotional balance are all developing during those first weeks of life. This happens through:
• Daily, intentional human interaction
• Controlled sensory and environmental exposure
• Calm structure, not chaos
• Observation, not guesswork

Feeding and cleaning is not enough.
Raising puppies correctly requires presence, knowledge, and responsibility.

Puppies Should Not Choose Themselves

One of the hardest truths for people to hear is this:

To me, breeding has never been a transaction.

I stay connected.
I guide.

And if life changes for an owner, I remain accountable for the dog I brought into this world.

That is what ethical breeding looks like.

Look deeper.
Ask better questions.
And choose someone who does not just produce dogs—
