👂🔬 Have you ever wondered how we know which antibiotic or medication to use for your pet’s ear infection?

Not all ear infections are treated the same—and there’s quite a bit that happens behind the scenes before we choose the right treatment! 🐾

When your veterinarian or technician swabs your pet’s ear, that sample is prepared for ear cytology. Here’s what happens:

🔬 The sample is placed onto a microscope slide
🎨 The slide is stained using three different stains
💧 It is rinsed and carefully dried
🫧 A drop of oil is added to the slide
👀 One of our technicians then manually examines several areas of the slide under the microscope to identify what is present—including different types of bacteria and yeast.

The results are then relayed to the veterinarian, who uses this information along with your pet’s examination to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Ear infections are about much more than smelly ears! 👃👂 There can be different organisms involved, and identifying what is present helps us choose treatment more accurately and effectively.

And treatment doesn’t stop when the ears look or smell better. ❤️

A post-treatment recheck is an important part of successful ear infection management. If the infection hasn’t completely resolved, it can come right back—and recurring infections can become increasingly difficult to manage.

So the next time your pet gets an ear swab, know that there’s a little bit of detective work happening under the microscope! 🔎🐶🐱

Healthy ears start with the right diagnosis. 🐾

🐱 Let’s Talk About Weight! 🐱

It’s always a fun conversation because we love seeing our cats happy, healthy, and enjoying a good appetite! ❤️

Treats are a wonderful way to bond with your cat, but remember: treats should make up no more than 5% of your cat’s daily calorie intake. It can be surprisingly easy for those little extras to add up!

Because we only spend a short amount of time with your cat each year, monitoring their weight at home is an important part of keeping them healthy. If you notice a sudden increase or decrease in weight, it’s time for a veterinary visit.

⚠️ Sudden weight loss can be an early sign of disease, including conditions such as hyperthyroidism or diabetes. Changes in eating habits or litterbox activity can also provide important clues about your cat’s health. These changes can be especially difficult to notice in a multi-cat household, so keeping an eye on each cat individually is important.

🩺 Annual wellness visits allow us to monitor your cat’s health and compare changes from year to year.

For our senior cats (7 years and older), we recommend wellness visits twice a year. These visits allow your cat to take advantage of our senior wellness program, including lab work that can help identify potential health changes early—before they become bigger problems.

So give your kitty some love (and maybe a small treat 😉), keep an eye on their weight, appetite, and litterbox habits, and let us know if something seems different.

Healthy cats are happy cats! 🐾❤️

✨ Benefits of enrichment toys:
🐾 Helps reduce boredom and destructive behaviours
🐾 Provides mental stimulation
🐾 Encourages natural foraging and licking instincts
🐾 Can help ease anxiety and stress

🐱 Let's Talk About Male Cats & Urinary Blockages 🚨

Did you know that male cats can develop a serious condition called Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD)? One of the most dangerous complications is when crystals or other material block the urethra, preventing urine from passing.

⚠️ Signs to watch for include:
🐾 Frequent trips to the litter box with little or no urine produced
🐾 Excessive licking of the ge***al area
🐾 Crying or yowling while trying to urinate
🐾 Lethargy, hiding, or loss of appetite

🚨 A blocked cat is a medical emergency. If your male cat is showing any of these signs, seek veterinary care immediately. Without prompt treatment, a urinary blockage can become life-threatening.

💙 Ways you can help reduce the risk:
💧 Feed a veterinarian-recommended urinary diet if advised for your cat.
🥫 Many cats benefit from increased moisture in their diet, such as canned food, to help support urinary health.
⛲ Encourage your cat to drink more water by providing fresh water daily and using a pet water fountain if they enjoy it.
🧼 Scoop litter boxes every day so you can monitor your cat's urine output and notice any changes early.

Early recognition and prompt treatment can save your cat's life. If you're ever unsure whether your cat is having urinary trouble, please give us a call—we're here to help! ❤️🐾

🌊🐶 Let's Chat About Hot Spots!

If your dog loves swimming, summer fun can sometimes come with an itchy surprise... hot spots!

Hot spots are painful, inflamed skin infections that can develop quickly—sometimes overnight. They're especially common in dogs who spend lots of time swimming because moisture trapped against the skin creates the perfect environment for irritation and bacteria.

🛟 How to Help Prevent Hot Spots
✔️ Dry your dog thoroughly after every swim, paying extra attention to the ears, neck, under the collar, armpits, and between the toes.
✔️ Brush regularly to remove loose hair and allow air to reach the skin.
✔️ Keep your dog on a good flea prevention program—flea bites are a common trigger.
✔️ Rinse off lake or pond water after swimming if possible, then towel dry.
✔️ Check your dog daily for redness, damp patches, or excessive scratching.

🩹 Think a Hot Spot is Starting?
If you notice a small red, irritated area:

🐾 Clip the hair around the area (if it's safe to do so).
🧼 Gently clean it with a pet-safe antiseptic such as chlorhexidine.
🌬️ Keep the area clean and dry.
🚫 Prevent licking and chewing by using an e-collar or recovery cone if needed.

Starting treatment early can often prevent a small irritation from becoming a large, painful infection.

🚨 When It's Time to See the Vet
Schedule an appointment if:
• The hot spot is spreading quickly.
• Your dog is in pain or constantly licking or scratching.
• There is pus, a foul odor, or significant swelling.
• The area is large or located near the eyes or ears.
• Your dog seems unwell or the hot spot isn't improving within 24–48 hours.

The sooner hot spots are addressed, the easier—and often less expensive—they are to treat.

🐾 Have questions about your dog's skin or ears after swimming? Give us a call—we're happy to help keep your pup comfortable all summer long!

💩 Let's Talk P**p! 🐶

Waking up to a dog with diarrhea is never the way anyone wants to start the day. Before you panic, ask yourself if there could be a reason for the sudden tummy upset:

🐾 Recent diet change?
🦴 New treats?
🌊 Swimming in a lake or creek?
💧 Drinking from puddles?
☀️ Spending too much time in the heat?

Here's what to do:
🥣 Feed a bland, gastrointestinal-friendly diet
Choose a homemade bland diet or a veterinary gastrointestinal diet such as:
• Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Gastroenteric EN
• Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat

💚 Add a probiotic
FortiFlora® SA can help support your dog's digestive health.

➡️ Continue the diet and probiotic until your dog's stools have returned to normal and for an additional 24 hours.

💧 Keep fresh water available at all times to help prevent dehydration.

🦠 Consider submitting a f***l sample. Even if your dog seems otherwise well, checking for intestinal parasites is recommended.

✅ If your dog's diarrhea is improving, they're bright and comfortable, and stools are returning to normal, a veterinary appointment may not be necessary.

🚨 Schedule a veterinary appointment if:
• Diarrhea lasts longer than 4 days
• The stool contains blood or looks like raspberry jam
• Your dog is vomiting and has diarrhea
• Your dog is lethargic, weak, or not acting like themselves

When in doubt, give us a call. We're always happy to help you decide whether your pet should be seen. ❤️🐾
