Just under 3 years ago clover and I had our first agility class, she was scared of the tunnel, many classes were cut short because something would spook her and she would shut down and not take food or anything.

Now she’s the most resilient girl I know and nothing knocks her down!

We head to agility regionals in 2 weeks, this will be our second time going and competing and I’m excited to do this with her again!

I never thought that agility would become such a huge part of our life and help clover in so many ways.

We have grown a lot as a team, our relationship has never been better and every time I am out there with her doing something she wholeheartedly loves and always gives her all is something so special to me.

We got 2 masters jumpers Qs today, only our second time trialing in masters. It’s been a journey, one that continues to push me out of my comfort zone and test us but I’m so grateful for everything.

A huge thank you to my coach Lana at Caerbannog agility who’s been a huge part of our growth in agility!

One mistake I used to make with reactive dogs was using the E-collar to stop escalation or recalling the dog away from triggers without giving any clear verbal guidance first.

Why is that a mistake?

Because it’s not fair to stop dogs from processing their environment or making decisions for themselves.

The goal is for our dogs to look, process their environment and move on, even if they have some feelings.

If you’re always stopping your dog from processing the exact moment it matters the most, it can lead to a dog not working through those behaviours fully.

Remember, E-collar doesn’t communicate directional pressure the same way a leash would.

So if we stim a dog simply for looking at a trigger because they “look” like they may react we can create conflict and confusion.

Especially adding in using the ecollar with no verbal connection.

What will happen?

The dog ends up being over managed. They become unclear on what they can and can’t do which leads to a dog that’s not truly confident in handling things themselves.

Instead, I want dogs:
• to know they can look at triggers and process them
• to learn how to make good decisions by knowing what’s acceptable and what isn’t
• to learn how to regulate themselves with clear minimal guidance from us

We are teaching dogs how to navigate the world, guiding them when needed but most reactive dogs don’t need lifelong management. If you need your ecollar to pass every dog or have to use obedience that’s management and it’s likely your dog could still blow up at any moment.

Happy national rescue day!

I have been fostering rescue dogs since 2022 and once I started, I couldn’t stop. It’s been a huge part of my life ever since.

I have fostered many dogs varying in breed, size and temperament, some long term and some short term but with every foster dog I learn something that stays with me forever.

Rescue dogs are special, they come with their own personalities, genetics and don’t usually have a good start.

But with that, they have each taught me how resilient dogs truly are. They are brave, intelligent and have so much more potential than people usually give them credit for.

I’m thankful for how the rescue world has brought people into my life that I’m forever grateful for and the lessons I have learned along the way!

Shown in the video (unfortunately not all the fosters I have had) - Remi, Hadley, Tundra, Pepper, Chase, Roo, Cedar (now Marlee), Bailey, Vic, Lacey

Meet Jax!

She is around 6 years old and is completing a behaviour modification private training program.

She’s working through:

- Separation anxiety
- Dog Reactivity
- Defensive feelings towards new people when on walks
- Being able to handle nail trims and handling

Something else that is also being looked at and getting professional care on is Jaxs gait and overall body health. He struggles to walk normally and will be going on a plan to help her overall body strength and conditioning!

She’s made great strides already with her behaviours and working towards being off leash reliable. There is a lot of work to do still but she’s got great owners putting the work in!
