The best thing I’ve ever heard about dogs and resource guarding is for people to stop taking away food from puppies. Think of it like you are sitting in a restaurant eating your favourite meal and someone comes up to your table and takes away your plate. I think you would have some choice words for that person, right? So I’m sitting here protecting our little visitor Jean while she has a chew through the thunderstorm. Roque and Tundra eat much faster than Odin and Jean so I will keep them away so they can eat their chews in peace.
Help your dogs grow confidence with their resources so they don’t have to feel protective of their food. If you want your dog to give up food, then practice food switching. Trade them for some food of equal value and grow it to trading for lesser value food but always makes sure it’s a good deal for the dog! My guys also go in their crates to eat for dual purpose: to increase value of the crate and also to protect them from each other, so no stealing takes place. You may not always be able to do this, but the more often you can prevent stealing, the better! Maybe even toss a treat down so your puppy gets a double boost of confidence.
