Kevin is a 90s dad, and he’s the neighbourhood dad. The guy who somehow knows everyone, fixes things he wasn’t asked to fix, and is always just… around.

He’s got a moustache that’s been there since ‘87 and refuses to leave. Wears the same rotation of jeans, white sneakers, and a windbreaker no matter the season. His garage is his kingdom. Radio always on, tools everywhere, and at least three half-finished projects he insists he’s “getting to.”

Kevin’s parenting style is hands-off but watchful. He’s not hovering, but he knows exactly where his kids are, who they’re with, and what they’re up to without ever asking directly. His rules are simple and non-negotiable. Be home when the streetlights come on. Don’t be stupid. Don’t embarrass him.

He’s not big on talking things out. You get a “hey” or a look, and you adjust immediately. But he shows up in his own way. Teaching you how to change a tire, how to mow the lawn properly, how to fix something instead of replacing it. Life lessons, no speeches.

Kevin’s also the dad other kids are slightly afraid of but weirdly respect. He’ll yell across the street if you’re doing something dumb, then five minutes later offer you a freezie like nothing happened.

He’s not soft, not overly involved, but he’s steady. Always in the background, making sure things run the way they’re supposed to.

Jeff’s a 90s part-time dad. Blue collar through and through. Spray foam insulator, steel-toe boots, hoodie that’s seen better days, and a truck that barely passes as reliable.

He’s rough. Talks loud, swears constantly, and keeps things simple. “You good?” is the full emotional check-in. If the answer’s yes, conversation over. Feelings aren’t really on the menu.

He doesn’t have his kids all the time, and in the 90s, nobody’s unpacking that. So when they’re with him, it’s loose. Frozen pizza, late nights, maybe a movie rental. Rules come out fast when needed. “Don’t make me say it again” is enough.

He forgets things, shows up last minute, still in work clothes half the time. But he’s there. At the event, yelling something that’s somehow supportive and aggressive at the same time.

He’s rough, he’s inconsistent, and he’s not winning any awards. But when it matters, he’s there. And in the 90s, that counted for a lot.

Richard is a 90s business dad. Suit every day, briefcase in hand, and a brick cellphone he thinks makes him look important. He runs meetings, trusts his planner more than people, and believes most problems can be solved with structure and a firm tone.

At home, that confidence lasts about five minutes.

He’s got three daughters and absolutely no control over any of them. He walks in ready to run things like a boardroom, and ends up holding a scrunchie while being told his “plan” doesn’t make sense. He tries to negotiate like it’s a deal. “Let’s all agree here…” and immediately loses to a twelve-year-old with better logic.

He’s not loud, but he’s got that classic 90s dad authority. The look. The pause. The “don’t push it.” And every now and then, a well-timed “don’t make me come back there” just to remind everyone he’s still technically in charge.

Somewhere along the way, though, he softens. He shows up to everything, learns more about hair and dance than he ever planned to, and quietly lets them win more often than he admits.

Richard runs a business all day. At home, he’s in a boardroom where he has no voting power and hasn’t won a negotiation in years, but he keeps showing up like it’s the most important job he’s got.

Doug is a 90s dad through and through. Equal parts love, volume, and “figure it out.”

At home, he runs things in that classic way. Fridge stocked, boots by the door, and a firm belief that if you’re upright, you’re going to school. He’s not big on heart-to-hearts, but he’s always there. His version of affection is a quick “atta boy” or a nod from across the room. And yes, every now and then, the famous “don’t make me grab the belt” line gets dropped like it’s just part of raising kids properly.

Doug also carries a bit of that small man energy. He’s not tall, but he makes up for it with volume, presence, and a refusal to be overlooked. Everything is dialed up just a notch. His voice, his reactions, his opinions. You can tell he’s spent a lifetime making sure people take him seriously, and now that he’s a dad, that intensity has a permanent home.

At the rink, that’s where it really comes out. Doug is pacing behind the glass like he’s coaching a national team. Coffee in one hand, pointing and yelling with the other. “SKATE!” “MOVE YOUR FEET!” followed by the occasional word that echoes just a little too clearly across the arena. He’s not trying to be embarrassing, he just genuinely believes if he cares enough and yells loud enough, something good will happen.

But behind all of it, Doug is solid. He’s the one flooding the backyard rink in the dark, fixing gear at the kitchen table, and showing up every single time no matter what. He might come in loud and a little intense, but his kids never have to wonder if he’s in their corner.
