When you’re shopping for kibble, one of the most important, but often overlooked things to check is the carbohydrate content.
👉 Dogs have no biological requirement for starch. Their bodies are designed to thrive on protein and fat. Carbs and heavy starches (like corn, wheat, rice, potatoes, or legumes) can:
• Upset digestion and cause gas or loose stool, hello Leaky Gut
• Contribute to weight gain and metabolic stress
• Fuel inflammation that often shows up in the skin, joints, and gut
⚖️ How to Calculate Carbs in Kibble
Pet food labels don’t list carbohydrate content (sneaky sneaky), but you can figure it out with a little math:
1️⃣ Look at the guaranteed analysis on the bag: protein %, fat %, fiber %, moisture %, and ash (if listed if not you can contact the company).
2️⃣ Add those numbers together.
3️⃣ Subtract the total from 100.
✔️ The remainder is the approximate % of carbohydrates.
Example:
Protein: 25% plus,
Fat: 15% plus,
Fiber: 5% plus,
Moisture: 10% plus,
Ash: 7%
= 62%
100 – 62 = 38% carbs
🌿 Why This Matters
A lower-carbohydrate diet means:
✨ Better digestion and nutrient absorption
✨ Healthier skin, coat, and immune system
✨ Reduced inflammation in joints and tissues
✨ More stable energy and weight
At Auroraw, we believe feeding isn’t just about filling the bowl, it’s about fueling your dog’s body, mind, and long-term health. When you check the carbs, you’re giving your pup the gift of a more balanced, biologically appropriate nutrition. 💚🐶
