Welcome “Indigo”…
This lovely girl has been visiting Pawtherapy throughout the past couple of weeks for red light therapy, massage and hydrotherapy, to aid in her recovery, from a cruciate injury in her hind leg. In addition to these therapeutic modalities, Indigo also partakes in some dry land exercises (at Pawtherapy), just prior to swimming, which will help to strengthen her hind leg and improve her coordination and balance, in hopes of preventing over compensation and strain to her other limbs. She makes my job incredibly easy (except for when i have to carry her into the pool…LOL) and is always eager to please. The best part about her visits though…is that her owner is already seeing subtle signs of improvement!
Keep up the good work Indy 💜💦🐶.

“Oscar”…
This boy definitely lives up to his breed standard as being a Portugese “Water Dog”. As much as he loves to jump off the ramp and retrieve toys, he is quite happy to sit on the edge of the ramp and splash in the water.
His bouncy, playful entrance always makes my day 🙂🐶💦.

A big part of the Learn to Swim program is building confidence in the water. As such, Pawtherapy uses a resting bench submerged in the pool, which can be set at various heights, depending on the dog's size. This bench allows for dogs to put their feet down and have periods of rest between laps - similar to a floating dock in open water. Being as swimming is a "learned behavior" for dogs, it is essential that we create as positive of an experience possible, where they feel secure, all while remaining in the water. With each and every dog the approach is different, whereby some dogs will have access to the bench during each swim session and others no longer require it and will confidently enter and exit the pool after each lap/toy retrieval. At Koda's first session, she very quickly became accustomed to going to the bench and recognized it to be a safe place, however at her 2nd session she was starting to swim off of it and initiating her own laps. Stay tuned for Koda's progress in the pool.🐾
