Ontario has now lost 5 horses to EEE this year! The vaccine is very effective and relatively inexpensive- don't delay if your horse is not current on this vaccine.

We have the race photo of Secretariat and Ron Turcotte’s Belmont win in 1973 in our office. It is almost 8 feet long because of the huge distance between 1st and 2nd! It must have been amazing to sit on that horse. Ron Turcotte made Canada proud! Rest in peace.

We are heartbroken that Ron Turcotte, Secretariat's Triple Crown-winning jockey, has passed away at age 84. Ron was a great jockey, a great man, and a great friend, and we will miss him dearly. Please read about Ron's inspiring life and legacy, and leave your condolences for his family and all who mourn his loss: https://www.secretariat.com/ron-turcotte-press-release/

Did you know strangles was one of the first equine diseases to be described by the early writers of veterinary science (was first reported in 1215) and is one of the most commonly diagnosed contagious diseases of the horse, worldwide? Though strangles is highly contagious and can affect many horses on a farm, particularly young animals, most horses with infection recover without complication.

It is not uncommon for strangles infections to recur on a farm with previous outbreaks of the disease. The bacteria can survive in water sources for over a month, but the primary source of recurrent infections is most likely asymptomatic carrier horses. Anywhere from 4-50% of the horses on farms with recurring strangles are asymptomatic carriers of the infection, and they may continue to shed the bacteria for months to even years, serving as a continual source of new infections.

If you suspect a strangles outbreak, be sure to involve your veterinarian right away to determine the diagnosis and the best control practices for your particular farm. Strangles is a reportable disease in some states. Movement of any horses on or off the farm should be stopped, and new horses should not be introduced. Monitoring the temperature of all horses daily and isolating horses at the first sign of fever is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of infection. Infected horses can transmit the bacteria to healthy horses one to two days after they develop a fever.

To learn more about strangles, you can visit the Equine Disease Communication Center's website here: https://www.equinediseasecc.org/strangles

As always, your veterinarian remains your best source of information and advice!

Hagyard’s Dr. Nathan Slovis was fortunate enough to discuss how the horse community can be exposed to and potentially contaminate clothing with infectious pathogens with Dr. Charles P. Gerba from the University of Arizona. Dr. Gerba has published over 500 manuscripts, many of which focus on whether enteric viruses, fungi, and bacteria such as Salmonella, rotavirus, and hepatitis A virus (HAV) survive the wash cycle, rinse cycle, and drying cycle commonly practiced in households in the United States.

Dr. Gerba and his colleagues have found that washing with detergent alone is not effective in removing or inactivating enteric viruses or bacteria from excessively soiled clothing. The most important factors for reducing the presence of viruses, bacteria, and fungi in laundry include washing on the hot cycle, using advanced detergents that contain enzymes and surfactants, and incorporating sanitizing agents. Following these protocols have been shown to reduce the pathogen load in laundry after washing and drying by at least 99.99%. Remember to utilize hot water, as that is necessary to help kill these infectious agents.

If you need to disinfect your laundry machine, Dr. Gerba recommends placing 500ml of household bleach into the washing machine, allow it to run a “full cycle” with NO laundry in HOT water and repeat. To decontaminate the dryer, it should be cycled for 2 hours at a minimum temperature of 131 degrees Fahrenheit, or you can manually clean the dryer with a strong disinfectant like accelerated hydrogen peroxide.
