I contacted the office of the Ward 3 Councillor, Nrinder Nann and learned that so far cadmium, copper, lead, zinc and mercury have been found in the soil at Karma Hill. A third party (not identified) has been hired to provide testing and analysis of the soil. A consultant has been engaged to “establish a scope of work for more thorough investigation to better understand the extent of the impacted soils, properly assess risks to all users (human, canine) and outline the steps required to reopen the space…”. The City attempted to reseed the soil with grass seed but drought conditions deterred growth. A full communication update will follow once investigation is complete. As not all grasses are equal in phytoremediation (using plants to either remove or stabilize trace elements in soil) I have asked what grass/ grasses will be used. More news as it comes.
