💛 Amber’s Big Weight-Loss Journey Starts Here! 🐾
Meet Amber. At 8.5 years old, this sweet girl has already been through a life-changing experience. Amber came into our care after her owner could no longer care for her. When she arrived, she weighed an incredible 12.6 kg (27.7 lbs).
She was confused, upset, uncomfortable and very sore. So, before asking anything of her, we gave Amber what she needed most: time, patience and a safe place to settle in. 💛
But Amber’s weight is now a serious health concern, and her journey to a healthier life has officially begun.
🐾 Why does Amber need to lose weight?
At her current weight, Amber is struggling to properly groom herself. She is unable to reach certain areas of her body, which has resulted in significant soiling around her perineal area and associated dermatitis. The contamination has also contributed to a urinary tract infection.
Amber also needs dental surgery, but right now, is considered too risky because of her weight. Losing weight isn't simply about helping Amber look slimmer — it is an essential part of getting her healthy enough to safely receive the medical care she needs.
💪 So what are we doing?
We are working with Amber every single day.
✨ She is on a carefully managed weight-loss diet.
✨ She receives pain medication to help keep her comfortable.
✨ Our Animal Care Team assists her with cleaning twice a day to help keep her skin healthy and prevent further infections.
✨ She gets short, manageable periods of exercise throughout the day.
✨ And we're celebrating every little bit of movement!
And we're already seeing some encouraging signs. 🥹💛
Amber has started getting up to chase a wand toy and walk around her room. These might seem like small things, but for Amber, they are BIG steps forward.
This isn't going to be an overnight transformation. Safe weight loss takes time, especially for a cat who is already uncomfortable and adjusting to so many changes.
But we're going to be there for every step, every gram lost, every extra lap around the room and every moment Amber chooses to play. 🐾💕
We cannot wait to watch this girl become happier, healthier and more comfortable in her own body.
