We lost one of our beloved FRAH staff pets this week. Lexie was the sweetest senior girl who loved everyone - she died suddenly from suffocation after getting her head stuck in a chip bag. We are sharing Lexie’s story with the intent of raising awareness about this common household danger.
A Preventable Tragedy We Need to Talk About 💔
This is Lexie — a beloved, food-loving dog who tragically lost her life after suffocating in a chip bag.
Her person, Deborah, is a devoted and experienced veterinary technician in our local community. She has spent her career caring for animals, and like so many of us in this field, she knew the risks and always tried to stay a step ahead. But these heartbreaking accidents can happen to anyone, in any home, no matter how much we know or how careful we are.
When pets get into chip or snack bags, they often push their heads in far enough that the bag creates a vacuum-like seal. As they eat, they quickly run out of oxygen — and can’t pull the bag off. It happens in minutes. Silently.
Many people still don’t realize this is even a risk — and that’s why Lexie’s story is being bravely shared: not to place blame, but to raise awareness and protect others.
Please help us prevent another loss:
• Store bags in sealed cupboards or containers
• Cut bags before throwing them away
• Share this post to educate others
