Let's chat about our livestock shall we? We're starting off with plecos!
The most common one you see is aptly named the common pleco, or Hypostomus plecostomus (say that 5 times fast!) These heavily armoured fish can get massive, up to multiple feet with the proper care and space!
Because of this, we only stock small species such as the clown pleco (Panaqolus maccus), or the bristlenose/bushynose pleco (Ancistrus sp.) These guys tend to max out at around 6", which is the perfect size for the majority of hobbyists. They tend to be calm, peaceful community fish, though they have a habit of attacking goldfish if kept together because they like to eat their slime coat, so we don't recommend cohabitating them!
The most common myth with this kind of fish is that they eat fish p**p, so you don't have to clean your tank as much. This is absolutely not true! Plecos commonly create more waste than they clean up, and the majority of the things they actually eat are biofilm and algae on the glass and decor.
These interesting fish are such a cool addition to your tropical tank, so if you think a pleco is right for you, stop by and have a chat with us about your set up!
