We get concerns and questions about our dogs in different situations which we appreciate that we can follow up on and explain so there is a better understanding.
We had some concern about service/therapy dogs being abused by autistic children. I just want to thank the person that was concerned and just put out some information to help with understanding.
Although a child can have a severe meltdown, screaming, which is very stressful for the dog the parent can/will remove the dog to help with stress levels for the dog and child., Once the child has settled then the dog can come back and comfort them.
The child is never the handler. A parent or adult guardian acts as the primary handler who issues commands, monitors the dog’s stress, and manages the safety of both parties, never leaving the dog alone with a child.
Dogs provide profound emotional, social, and physical benefits for children with autism. Whether acting as trained service animals or family pets, they help decrease stress, improve safety through tethering, and act as a calming social catalyst. They offer unconditional, non-judgmental friendship that helps children thrive.
