𝟰 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗣.

In my previous years of business, I always seem to have had something special going on for my anniversaries.

The first year was obviously the 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 year— and I also got nice business photos taken by the river. The second year, I was at my first ever North America Diving Dogs - NADD trial with a client's dog and my new . Last year, my third year, I got my first ever dealership-purchased vehicle, the .

This year, nothing special is happening.

There are no celebrations, no fun events, no milestone experiences to go along with it.

But not everything in life can be extravagant. Some years will not be special.

Sometimes, all that matters is just that I'm still here and I'm still up and running.

So, here's to another year 🥂

We love our p**p eaters all the same 😅❤️

Nayla isn't feeling well and the steroids she's on have her 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗿𝘆. Today was the first day she was caught trying to "pick up after herself" immediately after going to the bathroom 🤮

Because she is ✨muzzle trained✨ and wears her Trust Your Dog muzzle preemptively when let outside (since she usually forages for aged waste), she 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯'𝘵 get a mouthful of her chosen snack this afternoon 👌

Thankfully, biothane muzzles are SUPER easy to clean, too! Just wash with soap and they even air dry quickly! 🧼

In case I haven't said it in a hot minute, 𝗚𝗢𝗗, 𝗜 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗠𝗨𝗭𝗭𝗟𝗘𝗦.

Asuma cleaned up NASDA Regionals last weekend! 🏆

We might not have won the championship, but making it to the 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝟱 𝗼𝗳 𝟯𝟵 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 & 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 dogs and 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝟴 𝗼𝗳 𝟯𝟳 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 dogs is a MASSIVE accomplishment for us! Especially considering that this was our first ever time attending anything bigger than a normal North American Sport Dog Association trial.

Also, something I haven't told anyone who wasn't physically at Regionals yet either, is that Asuma was 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘁 when we woke up the morning of the first Regionals event.

The pool that we usually frequent does not have their turf stapled down on the dock— which usually isn't a problem for us because he's always planted all of his feet on the edge before pushing off, but the day before Regionals when I booked him pool time, he was just running straight to the edge and jumping!

I feel like a completely awful owner and handler for letting him jump this way (even though that's the actual goal) because with the turf sliding, his back legs were kicking out from underneath him. This caused him to be in immense pain the next morning RIGHT before we headed to the biggest competition of our lives...

I cannot thank Jodie, our fellow GP Working K9's member, enough for giving Asuma some Metacam that morning.

I also did not feel any less stressed until Michelle, pool owner of Prairie Dog Sports Inc., looked and felt Asuma over while we waited for our TL run that morning. With her background in canine physiotherapy, I trusted her diagnosis of a strain in the muscles around the base of his spine, as well as the care plan she suggested to help him heal.

I don't know what I'd do without Kate being my literal shoulder to cry on when I needed it and Sarah-Jane for reminding me that, "it's just dog sports and we're not saving lives here."

Despite Asuma giving me the absolute scare of a lifetime on the first day of Regionals, he recovered and advanced to the farthest rounds of the whole competition (and he was the only dog in our club to even do so). I could not be more proud of him. I hope we see everyone again next year! 🩷

The dogs have had one incredible roadtrip across 2 provinces this past week! 🗺️

We travelled 1000km from home to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan last Thursday to spend the following four days competing at the North American Sport Dog Association Regionals event, hosted by Hub City Kennel & Obedience Club.

Asuma and Rolo have been the best copilots all weekend, including the days that have involved 12+ hours of driving.

I couldn't not take their pictures in front of some of the coolest statues/landmarks today on our way home.

We briefly stopped at the:

𝟭. Vegreville Pysanka 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲, 𝗔𝗕 (world's largest Ukrainian Easter egg) 🥚
𝟮. 𝗦𝗸𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 Lloydminster, Saskatchewan (celebrates the Centennial of SK, representing a gateway to SK's past and future) 🍂
𝟯. "𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗙𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗲 𝗜𝗻" 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝗻 Battleford, Saskatchewan (it also celebrates the Centennial of SK in 2005) 🦬
𝟰. 𝟮𝟯𝗳𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱, 𝗦𝗞 (celebrates the centennial of the creation of the Mounties (1873) and the birth of the town (1875)) 🏇

Only a few more hours until we're finally home and can sleep in our own beds again 😌 I will absolutely post more about our experience at Regionals once I've gotten a good night's rest!

Moose and I had the 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 morning at Tire Pro Inc today! ☀️

This goofy rottweiler is still developing his puppy brain, so I've been building a relationship with him the past month and teaching him how to appropriately use said brain 🧠

He struggles the most with disengaging from things he finds interesting sometimes (ie. dogs, people, cars, etc); the closer, noisier, or more quick-moving the thing is, the harder it is for him to ignore.

I had an appointment early this morning to get my summer tires mounted back on, so I brought Moose along with me to practice our engagement training in a new environment! The side lawn next to the Tire Pro building gave us the perfect safe place to work while we waited 🌱

Tire Pro is known to be one of the best shops in our community, thanks to its generous owner Abe Braun, so there were plenty of people coming and going right from the time they opened. Moose successfully remained engaged with me throughout all the customers showing up, noisy power tools echoing from the shop bays, large waves of rushing vehicles along the main road (it was morning rush hour), and even the train bustling along the tracks across the road 👏👏👏

Even just a month ago, Moose was not very motivated to use his brain— if he wasn't being lured, he was fine just sitting and waiting for directions. Today, we free-shaped, problem-solved, and played, having the best training session yet 🩷

I am so grateful for clients who trust me to take their dogs to novelty environments (when I think they're ready for the challenge), as nothing makes me happier than helping dogs learn, grow, and 𝙨𝙪𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙚𝙙! 🎓

What do you know about "𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲?"

It's about asking for the dog's consent and only proceeding when you have it, right?

But what if you're working with a dog who will 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 100% give you consent? Do you abandon cooperative care completely?

All valid questions and I'm here to tell you that the answer is, whatever works best for you and YOUR dog!

Asuma doesn't ˡᵒᵛᵉ nail trims, but we've worked very hard to get to a point where he allows me to do them— as long as 𝘩𝘦 is allowed to communicate with me throughout the process.

Yes, I do have to apply gentle pressure here and there or else we would never get them done, but I still use cooperative care techniques to make sure that I'm not shutting down his communications entirely.

More so, I communicate back, "I hear you and you're okay," before either giving him a minute or gently applying pressure to ask him to let me continue.

The reason I do still believe that this falls into the cooperative care methodology is because even though I might be using light pressure to ask for consent, Asuma would NOT let me do his nails if he truly wasn't okay with it. He might not 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 it, but he tolerates it, and isn't that the goal when it comes to nail trims?

What do you think? Am I practicing cooperative care or is it something else?

This has got to be the 𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗘 dog job!! Chasing birds off of the tarmac? I love it 👏👏👏👏
