Two of a kind!

While dogs are as individual as people, specific breeds have been refined to develop specific trait’s desired by people, typically for a unique purpose.

This allows us insight into the types of activities that may be more enjoyed by certain breeds to give them purpose and fulfilment.

Owning a dog shouldn’t just be about what your dog does to enhance you life, but also what owners can do to give their dogs the best life ever.

Mr Bheema is a growing boy and he’s only getting bigger. Puppyhood is about creating positive associations to the things we desire and effectively reducing unwanted behaviours. Time spent shaping your pup pays for itself throughout its lifetime. Its far easier to address poor choices from their onset then to try to fix a long time problem.

We are back! Bring on the dog days of summer!

Apologies on the sporadic content over the last few weeks, we’ve been on vacation. I almost forgot what it’s like to not have a dog by my side. lol

Lesson schedule is back in full swing and boarding has resumed!

Miss Gracie has joined the ever growing Balanced Doghouse client pack! As happy as she is, her owners are ever more excited!

Together we will effectively control her overly enthusiastic greetings, excessive pulling, and minimize her vocalization, as she considers herself the CEO of the local neighbourhood watch!

TRAIN THE BRAIN: ITS TOO HOT TO WALK!!!

We all know that dogs are athlete’s and should get daily exercise. That said, weather doesn’t always coopeate with our intentions. Bad behaviour and chaos is not excusable just because a walk was skipped or routine disrupted for days because of unfavourable conditions.

While I used to give this advice for winter weather or rain days, the reality is with our warmer summer temperatures the need to find refuge indoors is a new reality.

Practice indoor obedience and mental challenges to drain energy, stimulate the mind, and create calmness when exercise is not an option.

My clients will attest to the long naps taken by their dogs after one of our training sessions, and possibly themselves too. Haha

The heat of the summer is in full effect.

Be far more precautionary when it comes to those temps and peak heat times!

Morning or evening adventures best or stay in the shade!

Be sure to have lots of fresh clean water for them to enjoy as well.

This should apply to humans as well. Stay hydrated!

Welcome Luna!

This sweet female Belgian Tervuren was born in Vermont and raised in Rhode Island prior to her arrival at the Balanced Doghouse for our Board & Train program

Her and her owners are now living seasonally in our beautiful province. While home renovations are being taken care of by her owners, she too is getting an upgrade while in our care.

Happy Humpday!

You ever wonder why your dog drags you to corners, fire hydrants, power posts & trees?

These are the “Community Bulletin Boards” of the dog world. They are an info centre to let each other know who’s around and what’s going on in the K9 community, just as humans leave business cards or upcoming events.

Bonus info: the term a “Pissing Contest” also originated from our canine colleagues. The higher up the tree the p*e the bigger the dog, and stature plays a role in their lives too.

Three of a kind…well sort of!

Did you know that dog show competitions are divided into categories, based on instinct amoung other criteria. For example: working group, sporting group, toy, etc.

These 3 are all in the herding group and trying to figure out who is in control, meanwhile, knowing all along that it’s me 🤣

Among dogs chewy face, chase & nipping is perfectly acceptable in moderation Touch is a significant form of communication to solicite play, express affection or disapproval

This should not be accepted when dogs attempt to use natural behaviours to manipulate or attempt to play with people.

We can help resolve this, among other unwanted behaviours.

Timing is one of the most important keys to dog training. Marking the moment we see a behaviour is no different than taking a snap shot. If not done precisely, the results may not be as beautiful!
