🐕 Dogs don't automatically understand that a cue means the same thing everywhere. Build the 3Ds gradually, one at a time, before combining them. If one D goes up, lower another. ✨ Small steps and successful repetitions build reliable behaviour.

Most recall problems start before we even call the dog.

If your dog is busy sniffing, chasing, playing, or focused on something more exciting than you, the recall cue often gets ignored.

That's why I teach the simple ACT formula:

👀 Attention
Get your dog's attention first.

📣 Call
Use your recall cue once.

🎉 Throw a Party
When your dog arrives, celebrate! Praise, food, toys, play, freedom, whatever your dog loves.

Remember: train, don't test. A reliable recall is built through hundreds of successful repetitions in different environments, not by hoping your dog will listen when it really matters.

✨ Reward markers are not just praise.

A reward marker is a short word or sound that:
✔️ Marks the exact behaviour you want
✔️ Predicts something good your dog wants

For example:
“YES!” → reward is coming 🍖

That is very different from casually saying “good boy” throughout the day without reinforcement.

A properly conditioned reward marker becomes a powerful communication tool because it creates a clear bridge between the behaviour and the reward. 🧠🐶

This is especially helpful because you do not need to rush the treat into your dog’s mouth the exact same second. The marker “holds the moment” for you.

That means reward markers can work beautifully:
✨ At a distance
✨ During recall training
✨ In reactive dog training
✨ During movement
✨ When timing would otherwise be difficult

We originally started with an online assessment back in March while Bailey was still settling into her new home.

Bailey is working through: • reactivity
• separation anxiety
• noise sensitivity
• over-arousal

Sunday was our first in-person session together.

New environment, new smells, busy Sunday setting... and Bailey still showed some really nice regulation skills. One thing I really liked was seeing how naturally she used her toy to help lower arousal and regulate herself in the environment.

• helping her nervous system feel safer

🕷️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻?🐕

Today I was reading on the deck when a spider suddenly climbed onto my blanket… and onto me.📚😱

Before I could even think, I reflexively flicked it away.🕷💀

A second later my brain caught up and I immediately felt bad. I usually catch and release spiders now, and I even joke with the big house spiders outside that they do not have a visa to come indoors. 😅

But this was actually a really good reminder of how fear reactivity works.

The spider was:
• 𝘀𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻
• 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲
• 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲

That combination triggered an automatic startle response before my thinking brain had time to process anything.💥

And honestly? That is exactly what happens for many fear-reactive dogs too.

The emotional brain reacts first. 💥
The thinking comes later. ‼️

This is why dogs cannot always “just stay calm” when something suddenly appears too close or overwhelms their comfort zone.
