🐾 Iggy is here to remind you 🐾 May is National Microchip Your Pet Month! 🐾

Did you know that a simple microchip can be the difference between a lost pet staying lost… and finding their way back home?

Microchipping is quick, safe, and permanent—and it gives your pet the best chance of being reunited with you if they ever go missing. Collars and tags can fall off, but a microchip stays with them for life.

✅ Takes just seconds✅ Works for dogs, cats, and even small animals✅ Increases the chances of going home where they belong

If your pet isn’t microchipped yet, now is the perfect time to do it! And if they already are, don’t forget to check that your contact info is up-to-date. 📲

Call your regular vet to set up an appointment to microchip your pet. 🐶🐱

🌟 Celebrating Veterinary Assistant Appreciation Week! 🌟

This week, we’re taking a moment to recognize the incredible people who are the glue of our veterinary team — our veterinary assistants. 💙

Veterinary assistants wear many hats, and they wear them all with compassion, skill, and dedication. Every single day, they:

🐾 Comfort anxious pets with gentle hands and calming voices.

🩺 Assist veterinarians during exams, procedures, and surgeries.

💉 Prepare and handle medical equipment to ensure everything is ready for patient care.

🧼 Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for pets and their families.

📋 Manage patient records and help keep our clinic running smoothly behind the scenes.

🍖 Feed, walk, and monitor hospitalized pets, making sure they feel loved and cared for.

💬 Support pet parents with empathy, answering questions and offering reassurance.

They are the ones behind the scenes keeping everything stocked so we have the supplies needed for emergency medicine. They keep the waters calm, offer steady hands during treatment. They may not always get the appreciation they deserve, but their impact is front and center in every happy tail wag, gentle purr, and grateful smile.

To our veterinary assistants; Alex, Gemma, Bailey, Danielle, Keirra, Megan
& Laksh*ta - thank you for your tireless dedication, your compassion for every patient, and your unwavering support for our team. You make a difference in countless lives — both furry and human — every single day.

Let’s flood the comments with ❤️, 🐶, and 🐱 to show our appreciation for these amazing animal care heroes!

🏖️ Sand Impaction Awareness – Zelda’s Story 🐾

• Meet Zelda, an adventurous pup who had ingested a large amount of sand without her owner knowing and ended up getting a sand impaction

⚠️ What is sand impaction?
• Sand can accumulate in a dog’s gastrointestinal tract
• It can cause a partial or complete blockage
• This is a medical emergency if left untreated

🚨 Signs Zelda showed
• Lethargy and discomfort
• Decreased appetite
• Abdominal pain
• Difficulty defecating / little to no stool
• Vomiting (can occur in many cases)

🏥 Veterinary care
• Exam confirmed concern for sand impaction
• Supportive care on IV fluids were initiated to help move sand safely through the GI tract
• Close monitoring for dehydration, worsening pain, or obstruction

💛 Outcome
• With prompt treatment, monitoring during her 31 hour hospital stay, Zelda’s repeat X-rays showed the improvement, she recovered and was able to go home
• Early intervention made all the difference

🐶 How to reduce the risk at the beach
• Discourage dogs from digging or chewing sandy toys
• Rinse balls and toys frequently
• Offer lots of fresh water
• Take breaks from play
• Watch for licking or eating sand

📢 Take‑home message
• Fun at the beach can come with hidden risks
• If your dog shows signs of illness after beach play, seek veterinary care right away

Sharing Zelda’s story can help keep other beach-loving pups safe 🌊🐕

🕷️ Tick Season Is Here! 🐾

Tick season is officially upon us, and these ticks were all removed from one puppy that came in to see us yesterday!

Ticks can transmit serious diseases and are often hard to spot—especially on young or fluffy pets. Ticks can be anywhere on the body; they like to attach between their toes, on the bottom of their paw pads, in elbow creases, on the face and ears.

Prevention is far easier (and safer) than treatment.

✅ Talk to your regular veterinarian about parasite prevention options that are best for your pet.
✅ Check your pets daily after outdoor time.
✅ Use a tick twister to safetly remove ticks.
✅ Don’t wait until you see a tick to start prevention.
✅ If your dog does have a tick attached, it is recommended to test them for tick borne illnesses 6 weeks after a tick bite.

If you have concerns or find a tick and aren’t sure what to do, contact your vet for guidance. Stay safe out there! 💚🐶🐕‍🦺

🐾 Chocolate Toxicity Awareness – Qantaqa “Tack’s” Story 🐾

• Meet Qantaqa (“Tack”), a sweet pup with a not-so-sweet emergency. While her owners were out, Tack ate ½ a tray of brownies made with ¼ cup of cocoa

🍫 Why chocolate is dangerous to dogs:
• Chocolate contains theobromine (and caffeine) — toxic to dogs
• Dogs cannot metabolize theobromine efficiently, so it builds up in their system
• The darker the chocolate, the higher the risk (cocoa powder & baking chocolate are especially dangerous)
•Smaller dogs = higher risk even with smaller amounts

🚨 When the owners got home • Noticed the missing brownies and immediately brought Tack in.

She was:
•Bloated and uncomfortable
•Panting and agitated
•Tremoring
•Bloodshot eyes
• Having diarrhea

🏥 On presentation
• Tachycardia – HR 210
• Hyperthermia
• Agitation and tremors
• All classic signs of chocolate toxicity

🩺 Treatment & monitoring
• Placed on ECG to assess cardiac rhythm
• Blood pressure monitoring for hypertension

♥️Hospitalized for:
•IV fluids for hydration and toxin excretion
•Supportive care
•Thermoregulation
• Activated charcoal to bind remaining toxin
• Anti‑diarrheal and anti‑nausea medications
• Close monitoring of vitals, cardiovascular and neurological status

💛 Outcome:
• After 24 hours, Tack’s symptoms significantly improved
• She was stable and able to go home
• She showed us how she can ‘sit pretty’ for us prior to being discharged 😍

📢 Take‑home message:
• Chocolate ingestion is a true emergency
• The type of chocolate, amount, and your dog’s size all matter
•If you suspect chocolate exposure — don’t wait, seek veterinary care immediately

Please share to help raise awareness and keep curious paws safe 🐶💚

🩸 Heroes Have Four Paws Contest closes soon- April 30th! 🐾

🤷‍♀️Why Cat & Dog Blood Donors Matter

Just like people, pets sometimes need blood transfusions to survive emergencies. Trauma, surgery, anemia, immune‑mediated disease, and toxin exposure can all turn an ordinary day into a life‑or‑death situation for cats and dogs.

That’s where hero donors come in 💪🐶🐱❤️
Volunteer blood donors make it possible for veterinary teams to act fast when every second counts.

✨ Donated blood is often the difference between life and loss✨ Most donors handle the process calmly and safely

If your healthy, friendly dog qualifies, they could save lives without ever knowing it.

Every donor is entered to win a Capital City branded Stanley! Call or email us about your pet becoming a donor—or help spread the word so lifesaving blood is there when it’s needed most.

❤️ Donate. Share. Save lives.

💚 It’s National Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Week!!! 🥳 April 19–25, 2026 💚

This week, we celebrate the incredible Veterinary Receptionists—our Client Care Representatives (CCRs)—the calm voices in chaos and the steady hands at the front lines of emergency medicine.

💚🐾 THANK YOU Nikki, Alex, Joe, Laura, Kyle, Brenna and Danielle 🐾 💚

They are often the first face you see when fear and worry walk through our doors, and the last face you see as you leave with answers, hope or a shoulder to cry on. In the middle of life‑changing emergencies, our CCRs remain compassionate, composed, and unwavering—guiding families through some of their hardest moments while coordinating critical care behind the scenes.

They balance ringing phones, incoming emergencies, difficult conversations, and complex logistics—all while showing empathy, patience, and kindness to every client and pet.

We truly could not do emergency medicine without them.
💚 Thank you for being the heart of our hospital.

Please join us in showing appreciation for our amazing Veterinary Receptionists this week—and every week. 🐾
