T-Minus 2 weeks until Hilary Strong will be at Valley Veterinary Hospital for behavioral appointments for both dogs and cats! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜ธ

Still on the fence if you should book an appointment? Here is a testimonial from one of Hilary's previous clients!

"We first met Hilary when we registered our dog Kingsley for a puppy class at our local vet. We were absolutely blown away by how welcoming, fun, safe, educational, and calm her classes were. Every dog loved/felt comfortable being around her. My experience in the past at other over sized classes was chaos and stress, with little to no guidance. She proactively adapted her learning techniques and environment at every class to suit the learning needs of each dog. Everyone got to learn in an environment that worked best for themselves and their new pup. This was especially helpful for our fearful pup who needed extra understanding, and for ourselves who needed extra guidance and support.

It wasnโ€™t long before our timid puppy grew up to be a reactive 120lbs dog, and I canโ€™t imagine having to navigate these challenges without Hilaryโ€™s help.

Weโ€™ve stayed in touch since day 1. We attended her Fiesty Fido cIasses, individual sessions, and exchanged frequent emails when we were feeling overwhelmed. Hilary understood the unique needs of our guardian breed and gave us the best path forward at every road block along the way.

One of the things we valued most was how she helped us set realistic expectations, work on our own behaviours, meet the needs of our dog, work towards new goals, and overall gave us the tools and support we needed for all of us to thrive. Kingsley is now an even better version of himself as we continue our journey together.

We learned so much working with Hilary, but some key take aways are:
- There are so many ways we can enrich the lives of our dogs outside of going for walks
- How we want/think our dog should behave in certain situations is not always whatโ€™s best for them.
- When you get to know your dog and adapt to/understand their unique needs, it all falls into place."

Hilary will be at Valley Veterinary Hospital for appointments every Monday between June 15th - August 31st. If you'd like to book an appointment you can reach out directly to Hilary by phone or email.

โœจ๐Ÿ˜บ June is National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month! ๐Ÿ˜บโœจ

This month is recognised as Adopt a Shelter Cat Month as we see lots of kitten births this time of year which results in many cats/kittens ending up in shelters.

How to support:
- Adopt/foster a cat! ๐Ÿ˜บ
- Volunteer at a cat shelter โค๏ธ
- Make a donation (cat food/treats, toys, cleaning supplies, litter) ๐Ÿงธ

There are many local shelters in the Fredericton area such as Fredericton SPCA, Oromocto and Area SPCA, CARMA Cat Rescue Maritimes Fredericton Chapter, and Saving paws Animal Rescue. You can check out their pages for events and ways to support the shelters! You can also visit The Purrfect Cup cat cafe and hang out with some adorable cats who are looking for a furr-ever home! ๐Ÿพ

Many of us here at Valley Veterinary Hospital have our fair share of shelter cats (including some foster fails ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ’•) and we can attest that our adopted kitties have become some of our greatest companions ๐Ÿ˜บ๐Ÿ’• (see photos below).

We all know cats ๐Ÿ˜บ are filled with their own personalities โœจ

I have two cats who are the complete opposite! Leopold (who you may have seen a few times on the page and in clinic) is very friendly, calm, and is a big cuddler. While my other cat, Everlayne, is skittish, shy, but she's also very sweet (on her own terms). ๐Ÿ’•

We are 3 weeks out until Hilary Strong will be at Valley Veterinary Hospital for behavioral appointments! Here's a little look into who Hilary is and her journey to becoming a dog trainer.

"My name is Hilary Strong; I have been a Professional Dog Trainer since 2013, a Certified Dog Behaviour Consultant since 2023, and was a Fear Free Veterinary Professional for 5 years. The melon-head in the picture with me was the love of my life, my heart dog, Taz.

You could say that I was the love of his life too, but to be honest, Taz never really liked many people aside from me. The running joke in our household is that his favourite saying if he could talk would be "I don't like that". He kind of came that way as a puppy (noise sensitive, hiding under tables to avoid well meaning visitors), and from many mistakes as a novice handler, I kind of made him worse. Taz soon turned into a growler, lunger, and air biter.

He is who inspired me to help other dogs and their humans work through similar challenges. Taz was as weird as they come (and so am I), and I quickly learned that reacting to him with physical punishment was damaging our relationship and not teaching him what I wanted him TO DO instead. I found that teaching him coping mechanisms, building positive associations, and having fun with him no matter how much progress we made that day made all the difference! This of course did not mean I became permissive, but rather I would set him up for success.

He still never became even close to perfect (and neither am I), because dogs are not machines that can be reprogrammed overnight. It is a lot of work to rewire a brain that has a lot of practice rehearsing the old undesirable behaviours. Don't ever let anyone tell you differently. There is no magic fix.

With that being said, with gentle leadership skills, knowledge of how animals learn, and a great partnership, I have seen many dogs transform and their humans become better trainers. Because of my experiences with Taz and now many other wonderful dogs, I want to help puppies get the right start, adult dogs reach their full potential, and challenging dogs cope through this crazy society that is forever moving too quickly for them.

Taz passed away from cancer in 2021, but his goobery spirit still plays a major role in my life. This will always be a life of helping dogs and their families because of him.

Thank you for listening to our story, and feel free to reach out with any questions about consultations, training, presentations, and behaviour help."

Hilary will be at Valley Veterinary Hospital for appointments every Monday between June 15th - August 31st. If you'd like to book an appointment you can reach out directly to Hilary by phone or email.
