THIS!!! TRIM YOUR RABBITS NAILS PEOPLE!
đź©· Your Rabbit Is Not a Medieval Dragon. đź©·
Alright. I’ve been sitting on this for a minute.
I received a rabbit a little while back… and baby when I tell you her nails were DAGGERS, I mean I could’ve opened Amazon packages with those things.
That is not cute.
That is not “oops I forgot.”
That is not “they grow fast.”
That is neglect. Let’s call it what it is.
Rabbit nails do not magically stay short. They grow continuously. If you are not trimming them regularly, they will:
• Curl
• Shift the way the rabbit stands
• Get caught in cage wire or hutch flooring
• Rip out (yes, I said RIP OUT)
Especially for rabbits housed in cages or hutches, long nails are a recipe for disaster. One wrong snag and now we’re talking blood, pain, infection, vet bills, and a terrified rabbit.
And before anyone gets defensive...
Yes, I am fully aware some of you are not just pet owners.
You’re running full scale rabbitries.
Trimming that many rabbits in one day? Time consuming. Exhausting. I’ve done it. I know.
Which is exactly why I don’t wait and let it pile up.
Instead, I trim 3 rabbits every single week.
That’s it. Three.
I quite literally have a written rotating list so nobody gets skipped. It takes the overwhelm out of it and keeps everyone on schedule. No marathon clipping sessions. No “oh crap it’s been three months.” Just routine maintenance at this point.
If you run a rabbitry, systems are your best friend. Structure prevents neglect. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Now back to the part people don’t like:
“It’s hard.”
“They hate it.”
“I’m scared to hit the quick.”
Okay. And?
You chose to own the animal. Maintenance is part of the job description.
If you can’t trim them yourself, learn. Ask someone experienced. Watch tutorials. Have a mentor show you. Pay a groomer. Go to a vet. There are options.
But letting them grow into talons is not an option.
We are not running a medieval falconry program. We are caring for domestic rabbits.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about baseline care.
Also tip y'all: if you do trim into the quick you can dip the nail in cornstarch to clot the bleeding.
Check them every couple weeks. Trim as needed. Make a rotation. Write it down. Set a reminder. Whatever works for YOU.
Your rabbits deserve to walk comfortably.
They deserve better than “I forgot.”
If this post makes you uncomfortable, good. Let it. Then go check your rabbits’ nails.
Clip clip, babes. 🫶
