North Peace Veterinary Clinic

North Peace Veterinary Clinic Veterinary care founded in our community, for our community. From its inception the practice has served families, family pets, and the family farm.

The North Peace Veterinary Clinic was established in 1963 by Dr. Peter Cribb, and purchased by Dr. Richard Wood in 1967. In the early years the practice was located in the basement of the Wood family home. Farm calls were many and often cows and horses were cared for in the carport with the blessing of the neighbours. As the needs of the practice and community grew it was obvious more space was ne

eded and the current clinic was constructed in 1974. Growth and expansion dictated an addition to the building in 1989, with several renovations occurring over the years. In the fall of 2013 we opened a large addition to the practice nearly doubling it’s size. A new large animal facility and small animal boarding and hospitalization wards were added. Many individuals and veterinary associates have contributed time, energy and expertise in the expansion and development of the practice over the decades. Today the practice is owned and managed by Drs. Perry and Corinne Spitzer. The veterinary care team consists of many individuals with a broad range of skills and interests in large and small animal veterinary care. Today, as in previous decades, we endeavour to continually provide dependable, available, progressive veterinary care to our clients and patients. Together we are the North Peace Veterinary Clinic, founded in our community, committed to our community, and proud to provide veterinary care for our community.

Toe (commonly called claw) amputation can markedly improve the quality of life for some cows.
Earlier this summer, an 11 year old cow presented to the clinic for lameness that was not resolving with treatment at home. Upon exam, Dr Kim Jones (joined by Trent, Summer and Angelina, 3 of our summer students) discovered that she had a joint infection, that was now draining. An X-ray was taken, and it was determined that amputation was the best treatment.
The cow was sedated by an injection into the tail vein, the site was then shaved and cleaned and prepared for surgery. Intravenous local anesthesia was injected into the lower limb, and the amputation was then performed. The cow was bandaged, and went home walking and feeling better!

PET SAFETY TIPS!!!
Help your furry friends stay cool and happy this summer and fall!

Watch for signs of heatstroke: rapid panting, hot skin, twitching muscles, dazed look, lethargic, vomiting and even collapse. Do not encourage exercise during the hottest parts of the day. This can be fatal, contact us ASAP if you suspect your pet has heatstroke. Brachycephalic breeds like Pugs and Frenchie’s are at a higher risk to overheat faster due to their anatomy not allowing them to move air as effectively.

Keep your pets hydrated! Offer fresh, cool water for your pets always, and bring portable water bowls for long hikes or outdoor activities.

Find a cool spot. Ensure your pet has shade available to them outside, and if your dog enjoys it, a sprinkle from the hose can help cool them off on a warm day! Small circulating fans or portable AC units can also be used to ensure the house stays cool for pets during the day.

Its allergy season. Common allergies for our companion animals include pollen, grasses, trees and weeds. If your pet is scratching excessively, or chewing at their paws, call to book for an exam, and we can help figure out the best treatment plan.

Stay up to date on vaccines and dewormer. Our pets are most likely to come in contact with other animals at campgrounds, parks and gatherings when we are out and about enjoying the season. Make sure your furry friends are protected from anything they may pick up, including internal and external parasite control.

It takes a team!
Earlier this summer we received an early morning call about two guardian dogs that had an encounter with a porcupine that had entered their barn. Unfortunately for Willow and her sister Lux, this resulted in many painful quills to the face, neck, paws and ears. Both dogs arrived at the clinic and were quickly assessed by doctors Sydney Spitzer and Saskia de Jong. Each doctor was able to sedate one of the animals to help allow for pain-free quill removal. Armed with our team of veterinary technicians and students to help with monitoring and quill removal, the quills were successfully removed from both Lux and Willow, who happily returned to their farm later that day.

Our Story

The North Peace Veterinary Clinic is proud to provide veterinary care to the Fort St. John community for over 50 years. From its inception we have served our community providing veterinary care to families, family pets, horses and family farms. Today the practice is owned and managed by Drs. Perry and Corinne Spitzer. Our veterinary care team consists of many individuals with a broad range of skills and passions in large and small animal veterinary medicine and surgery.

The practice has continually evolved with many team members contributing time, energy and expertise in the expansion and development of the practice over the decades. In the early years the practice was located in the basement of the Wood family home. Farm calls were many and often cows and horses were cared for in the carport with the blessing of the neighbours. Continual growth and expansion necessitated the construction of the current clinic in 1974, an addition to the building in 1989, and several renovations over the next 2 decades. In 2013 we opened the latest addition with a new large animal facility, small animal boarding and hospitalization wards.

Today, as in previous decades, we strive to continually adapt to the evolution of veterinary medicine and our community’s veterinary care needs. Our team is proud to continue North Peace Veterinary Clinic’s legacy of providing dependable, available, progressive veterinary care to our clients and patients. Together we are the North Peace Veterinary Clinic, founded in our community, for our community, for over 50 years.
