"Jeremy" came in to see Dr. Perry Spitzer at 5 days of age with a broken front leg. His radius and ulna were fractured which made a splint an appropriate option to reduce pain, align the bones, and stabilize and support his leg while it heals. The splint was customized to his leg and applied with the assistance of our summer vet student Rheana!
Calves present relatively often with acute lameness, making a fracture the first diagnosis to consider. Not all fractures can be splinted with Jeremy's style of splint. Some fractures need to be supported with a cast or specialized splints that are more complicated. Unfortunately, some breaks high in the leg, like fractures of the femur, cannot be externally supported with either a splint or cast.
Jeremy was back for a recheck last week with Dr Perry and Katie, our University of Calgary vet student here on rotation. His splint was checked and refitted, and we look forward to seeing him again in a couple weeks to see how his healing is progressing.
