North Peace Veterinary Clinic

North Peace Veterinary Clinic Veterinary care founded in our community, for our community. From its inception the practice has served families, family pets, and the family farm.

The North Peace Veterinary Clinic was established in 1963 by Dr. Peter Cribb, and purchased by Dr. Richard Wood in 1967. In the early years the practice was located in the basement of the Wood family home. Farm calls were many and often cows and horses were cared for in the carport with the blessing of the neighbours. As the needs of the practice and community grew it was obvious more space was ne

eded and the current clinic was constructed in 1974. Growth and expansion dictated an addition to the building in 1989, with several renovations occurring over the years. In the fall of 2013 we opened a large addition to the practice nearly doubling it’s size. A new large animal facility and small animal boarding and hospitalization wards were added. Many individuals and veterinary associates have contributed time, energy and expertise in the expansion and development of the practice over the decades. Today the practice is owned and managed by Drs. Perry and Corinne Spitzer. The veterinary care team consists of many individuals with a broad range of skills and interests in large and small animal veterinary care. Today, as in previous decades, we endeavour to continually provide dependable, available, progressive veterinary care to our clients and patients. Together we are the North Peace Veterinary Clinic, founded in our community, committed to our community, and proud to provide veterinary care for our community.

"Jeremy" came in to see Dr. Perry Spitzer at 5 days of age with a broken front leg. His radius and ulna were fractured which made a splint an appropriate option to reduce pain, align the bones, and stabilize and support his leg while it heals. The splint was customized to his leg and applied with the assistance of our summer vet student Rheana!
Calves present relatively often with acute lameness, making a fracture the first diagnosis to consider. Not all fractures can be splinted with Jeremy's style of splint. Some fractures need to be supported with a cast or specialized splints that are more complicated. Unfortunately, some breaks high in the leg, like fractures of the femur, cannot be externally supported with either a splint or cast.
Jeremy was back for a recheck last week with Dr Perry and Katie, our University of Calgary vet student here on rotation. His splint was checked and refitted, and we look forward to seeing him again in a couple weeks to see how his healing is progressing.

Brave mama Lacey!
Last month, this sweet Shetland Sheepdog came in to see Dr. Sydney Routley after her water broke, but labor didn’t progress even with induction. Our team along with the owner made the call to proceed with a C-section which was performed by Dr. Sydney Spitzer. We welcomed 4 healthy puppies into the world, pictured here with our technician Anita.

If your dog's water breaks and labor doesn't start or progress, don’t wait as this may indicate dystocia ( difficult or abnormal birth). Dystocia can put both the puppies and mother at risk.

Seek veterinary attention if:
-No labor within 2-4 hours
-Strong contractions with no puppy (30-60minutes)
-Long gaps between puppies (more than 2 hours)
- If a placenta passes without a puppy appearing within 10-15minutes

Early care can save both mom and pups!

Happy birthday to Dr. Sydney Spitzer! While pictured sitting today (for a reluctant photo 🙂), Sydney is always on the move mentoring and assisting team members in between her own patients! As our medical director, we appreciate her leadership and oversight of the medical business aspects of the clinic. Seven years as one of our mixed animal veterinarians and counting! Have a wonderful day and year ahead Sydney 💐🎂.

Not only mentoring but collaboration! We love teaching but also really enjoy the fresh ideas students bring to the team. Daneya is a 4th year Western College of Veterinary Medicine student doing her primary care rotation with us this month. Cattle are her favourite species, so she’s especially happy to see anything bovine related 😊. Stay tuned to meet more of our great students!

Happy birthday to Dr. Kim Jones. After 16 years with us, she still loves the variety of rural mixed animal practice. From small animal surgery to large animal medicine she’s keen to tackle most anything! Thanks for all you do Kim …and for taking the time for a photo op between large animal appointments and mentoring students today 😊.

Artemis, a 4 year old Belgian Malinois, came in to see us after an accident at the dog park left her with a neck laceration caused by a stick puncture. Dr. de Jong carefully repaired the wound under sedation, and Artemis handled everything well. She was such a happy girl and an absolute pleasure to work with- sweet, brave, and so good for her visit. We trust she’ll be back enjoying more dog park adventures before long!

These 2 littermates got lots of attention from Harsh*t and the team after their spay/neuter and brachycephalic surgeries. Pausing to visit the pugs during a busy day created lots of smiles 😊!

Remember seeing this cute trio as newborns when their mom had a c-section with us?
Eevee, Mulee, and Pikachu have now had their first vaccinations – an important step towards a healthy future. Mulee stayed calm, Eevee was a bit wiggly but brave, and Pikachu watched over everyone quietly.
After a few nervous moments, they were rewarded with treats and cuddles, then curled up together for a well-earned nap. A big milestone for this adorable trio!

🚨 Colostrum is critical for calf health!

Bagged commercial Colostrum is currently out of stock with all of our suppliers. There is no estimated time of return at this point.

A few things we’re recommending right now:

🥛 When you can, milk and collect colostrum from your own cows
🧊 Freeze and store extra when you have it. Generally freeze in 500ml to 1L units. Freezing flat in plastic freezer bags allows for quick defrosting.

Having your own supply on hand can make all the difference when things don’t go according to plan.

Hang in there. Calving is almost done and spring is finally here!
