๐ฆ Found a Baby Bird? Here's What To Do! ๐ฆ
Spring and summer are baby bird season, and it's not unusual to come across a young bird on the ground. While our first instinct is often to "rescue" them, the best thing you can do depends on the bird's age and condition.
๐ก Did you know?
Many baby birds found on the ground are actually fledglings (young birds learning to fly). Their parents are usually nearby, still feeding and caring for them.
Before stepping in:
โ
Check if the bird is injured.
โ
Determine whether it's a nestling (few or no feathers) or a fledgling (mostly feathered).
โ
Follow the decision tree below to help determine the best course of action.
โ ๏ธ A common myth is that parent birds will reject a baby if a human touches it. This is not true! If a healthy nestling can be safely returned to its nest, that's often the best option.
โค๏ธ Remember: A baby bird's best chance of survival is usually with its parents.
If you're unsure what to do, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for guidance before attempting to raise or care for a wild bird yourself.
